Does this work with Apple Pay on the phone too? Fed up of having to twist my wrist at awkward angles to pay with Apple Pay on the watch.

I feel like Apple is penalizing people who don’t have or can’t afford an Apple Watch, especially during a pandemic.
This is lowest common denominator thinking. That is, unless you have a secure unlocking idea for non Apple Watch owners that Apple is purposefully ignoring.

Mentioned in the article:

However, bear in mind that you can only use your Apple Watch to unlock your iPhone while wearing a mask – it can't be used for authenticating Apple Pay or App Store purchases

Does not work.
On my Series5 it tells me a softwareupdate is needed, although I‘m on 7.4.
And with the S3 I get a connection-error…

edit: got the s3 working. Somehow ‘unlock with iphone‘ was untoggled in the apple watch app.
s5 is still grayed out.

Apple really botched the release of this feature.

Rather than getting it in the hands of people ASAP when we needed it most, they coupled it with one of their largest privacy updates in ages, forcing this to get delayed for months. They should’ve split this out as a separate release and pushed it as quickly as they could.

By now, people are getting vaccinated (yay!) and some states are even no longer requiring masks (and many could be following shortly, if the case numbers continue to decline).

Thanks, but you’re a little late.
You know there are other countries in the world, right?

Still need to put in my passcode to use Apple Pay making this update pointless for people wanting to use it as still have to put in passcode, major fail Apple. Hopefully they’ll fix it soon.

You feel penalized? How are you worse off today than yesterday? You unlock your phone the same way you have for past year.

Everyone would actually be penalized if Apple had lessened FaceID security so EVERYONE could unlock their iPhone with their mask on and just eyes visible.

Good thing I bought an iPhone with Touch ID rather than one of the more expensive ones with Face ID. Now I don’t have to buy an Apple Watch just to unlock my phone with my face.

Updated both iPhone and Apple Watch. I tested the Face Mask - ID unlock, worked 2 times and that's that. I cannot get this to work anymore! 😧 I restarted watch and phone, toggled off, on the "Unlock w/ Watch" in Face ID settings, no luck.

I'll get this "Unlocking" screen for 1-2 seconds, then it prompts me to use the pin code. After 3, 4 times it then states "You must unlock phone to use Face ID" SMH!

Face ID works fine as usual with no mask.

Various places. TX and FL probably for the most press a month or so back.

GA never had a statewide mandate even though masks were encouraged, and most of the emergency orders were lifted a few weeks ago.

Lots of stores still strongly encourage shoppers to wear masks, especially in Atlanta area, but when you get out to the rural areas you see a lot less mask wearing.

and GA numbers keep dropping.

This is too much work. Just hit face id on iphone and type in pass code.
This seems like a lot of work. I’ve just been pull my mask down for a sec.

If you're in the grocery store, looking at your shopping list (located on your iPhone, of course), you go find the item. Then, look at the next thing on your list. Go find the item. etc. etc.

Then, you have stores such as Sam's Club and Walmart with Scan and Go. You can use their app to scan in each item, as you put it in your cart.
Scan and Go is used so when you're done shopping, there's no waiting in line. You just hit "Checkout" on the app, or scan the QR Code at a register, which pays for the stuff, and you walk out. No waiting in line.

Finally, Uber Eats/Door Dash/GrubHub/Postmates/InstaCart/etc. drivers... They're required to wear a face covering. Gotta go into a restaurant/store to pick up order, place the delivery on the customer's doorstep, and then take a picture. Gotta unlock the phone. Over and over all day/night long.

Taking your face covering off over and over kind of ruins the purpose of wearing one. Punching in your passcode over and over gets old real quick.

For these reasons and many more, this is an extremely welcome feature. Life-changing for many!

Is this only for America? Admittedly I haven’t researched the answer, but most of the world is currently at the highest Covid rates to date. If this is available where Apple watches are being sold then it’s a feature that most of the world needs. Not just the 4% that live here in the States.

It seems that wifi is required to be on for this to work (?). At least that’s what my phone is fussing at me to do. No wifi, no unlock.

This feature apparently is available on my iPhone — but not for my iPad Pro!!! 😖. Both have… 14.5

Apple - - why?!?!?!
