I am shocked that my battery health is 96% on a phone that is 8 months old. I hope it goes back to 100 after this calibration. That seems like it's a significant drop off.. 4% in 8 months.

It is normal. 80% in two years is normal. I have 87% in 1,5 year.

With the release of iOS 14.5, Apple introduced a new process for recalibrating the battery health reporting on the iPhone 11, 11 Pro, and 11 Pro Max.

The update recalibrates the maximum battery capacity and peak performance capacity on ‌‌iPhone 11‌‌ models to address inaccurate estimates of battery health reporting that some users have encountered.

Symptoms of this bug include unexpected battery drain behavior or in some cases, reduced peak performance capability, but these issues should be fixed after installing the update.

Once you've updated your iPhone 11 to iOS 14.5 or later (Settings -> General -> Software Update), you'll see a message in the Settings app under the Battery -> Battery Health section informing you of the recalibration process.

Note that the process can take a few weeks to complete after updating your device. This is because recalibration of the battery's maximum capacity and peak performance capability takes place over the course regular charge cycles.

It's also worth bearing in mind that the displayed maximum capacity percentage won't change during recalibration, and while peak performance capability might also be updated, it may not be noticeable.

Only when the recalibration is complete can the maximum capacity percentage and peak performance capability information be regard as accurate. If the recalibration indicates that battery health has indeed significantly declined, you'll see a battery service message.

In some cases, your iPhone 11 battery's recalibration may not be successful and a battery service message will pop up. In such cases, Apple will replace affected batteries free of charge to restore full performance and capacity to your device.

You don't need so much paragraphs, just say "It will be done by itself, don't worry."
The real instruction is to let it happen.

Wow so many people don’t trust Apple with battery health. Lol
My iphone 11 is 1.5 years old and has been on 87% for at least a year and lasts about half as long on full charge as when I got it, so nope, I don't trust them on phone battery health 😅

If I charge it to 100% and let it drain to 0%, will it finish calibrating right away?

what process does coconut battery use and how would they have more knowledge of the iPhone hardware than Apple?
It reads the total battery cycles and remaining battery capacity. Couldn't be simpler and more to the point. It doesn't take weeks to know a battery's performance and health.

And the fact that Apple would know more doesn't mean that they will use that knowledge in the user's best interest.
Apple is using this recalibration to weasel out of battery replacements.

And here I thought, with my battery sitting at 81% after being at 85% a week ago, I’d get to at least get some of my money’s worth out of AppleCare when it hit 80% at some point this week.

It makes you wonder if this is being implemented to prevent people from getting battery replacements due to the pandemic still going. If your battery is really deteriorating and needs replacing but you do this update and it recalibrates your battery to now show it’s not deteriorated...your likely to not visit an Apple store that is most likely not open anyway for replacements.

I’ve used coconut battery for a long time and it’s really very accurate showing cycles and how your battery is degrading.

While the Battery Health statistic may have been grossly inaccurate on the iPhone 11 with previous versions of iOS, it is still not accurate on any iPhone on any version of iOS. It never has been and never will be.

EXACTLY this. It's installed to mess with you. Make you think your battery is messing up and wearing out. Turn off battery percentage on the home screen, just use your phone. I think part of the battery wear problem is fast charging. heat does not help batteries one bit. I have only used the small iphone charger with my iPhones and even my 6s has 89% battery life left after A long time of charging every day. It still goes for a full day of moderate useage on a charge.

I just realized that my iphone 6s is 6 years old. I bought it in october of release year which was 2015. Only seems like yesterday. Mindblown. It still works as good as the day it was bought. Something to be said for that.

The 6s is one of the best smaller iPhones Apple ever made. The only negatives is the 1715 mA·h battery which went down some from prior year due to the tapic bar they had to make room for. If the 6s had more mA-h it would have been perfect. I’ve been through 3 or 4 batteries since I bought it in 2015 and it still works great. I’m currently at 84% health on 14.4.2 and it’s not lasting a whole day anymore.

I’m considering getting a refurbished 11 pro which I hear will be a great upgrade to my 6s and also will have an excellent battery.

I am still on the original battery in the 6s. It's kickin arse and takin names. I would just get the 11. I went between the two and the 11 is just as good really.

No, I don’t need a taller iPhone like the 11 and the display is only 326 ppi vs the 11 pro at 458 ppi. I actually really don’t want to go any bigger than my 6s in terms of size so the 11 pro dimensions match very close to my 6s. No sense in getting another 4.7 since I’ve had that for 6 yrs. Since I tend to hold on to phones for a longer period than most why not get the best display with the best battery capacity in a form factor that matches my 6s.

I was holding out for Touch ID on the 13 but little rumors about that happening lead me to believe Apple won’t implement it.

Ahh gotcha. Most people go for the pro because they think it has far superior cameras and things like that. They should have never removed touch ID. Apple is bass akwards in their biometric unlocking strategy. Even before the pandemic as well. Things that should have face ID have touch ID and vice versa. Mac and iPad should have faceID and iphone should have touchID.
