I remember apple practically pioneered podcasts, and they can’t even stay the leader. Why is Apple a follower when it comes to services? Why is Spotify ahead of Apple in the podcast space?

All apple ever really did was create the player they never treated it like a service but as a feature. Now that they have a potential revenue stream from it there is an incentive to innovate now. Personally I’m not paying to listen to any podcasts and completely fine with listening to the sponsors creators advertise themselves.

It’s always been there just swipe from the right on the episode you want to delete in downloads
Delete in downloads I'm talking about removing it from "Latest Episodes" currently the only way that I understand you can remove them from that is marking it as played.

That's great and all, but the app is in a serious need of UI liposuction. It's incredibly cluttered.

Crappy podcast update also downloaded entire shows libraries going back months. My usage jumped up something ridiculous like 13 GB.

It had unchecked the "limit downloads to most recent" so it there was no limit on how many downloads happened.

I had to go into settings and recheck all the show's "limit downloads" for each followed show.

ANNOYING.
Did the same thing to me.

I had been trying the Apple podcasts app again for the last few months. (and disliking it all over again) After this last update I unsubscribed everything with the Apple app, deleted it, and am using Downcast again. Feels so much better!

Anyone having issues with podcast that typically get uploaded mid or late day not appearing till the next day? Example Jason Snells podcast Upgrade is usually uploaded very late in the afternoon. Before the update it would appear when available every Monday. Now it’s not available till Tuesday morning. Same for Macbreak Weekly. Normally available Tuesday night but now not available till Wednesday morning. There use to be a setting that would continuously refresh for new episodes in the background but now it’s gone.
Yeah I subscribe to (now "follow") a few daily news podcasts that are uploaded early in the morning and I listen to every morning, but now they don't show up in the Apple Podcrap app until some time in the afternoon. Which is perfect if I want to listen to day-old headlines every morning!

Does anyone still use the Apple Podcast app? . I don't know what it is about that app, but someone at Apple seems to be doing an experiment on just how bad they can make the user experience. Of course, a few Apple stalwarts continue to hold out hope, and continue to use it. Maybe that's part of the experiment? 😁

I know I reached my limit with it and moved on a few years ago. RSS Radio isn't perfect, but it does the job.

Plenty of people going from the recent threads.

There are so many better apps than the apple podcast app. Lot of enhanced features being developed too;

I just wish I could sort a station by episode length. Then, I could listen to shows in order of shortest to longest. I could knock out the quick 2-5 min episodes on my way to work and then listen to the longer ones as the day unfolds.
Yep.
I'd say about 25% of my subscribed podcasts no longer show the length of the episode. If I click on it to read the full episode summary it will say episode length is 1 second. I will have to start listening to it to see the actual length. Very frustrating.

Have no idea what they changed, but whatever the did it's worse than before. It's more difficult and cumbersome to use the app now. Well done Apple.

Can I get rid of the now playing bar when there’s nothing to play?

I’m talking about this:
69F30430-7FB3-4DD1-8F6B-0774FDC29270.jpeg

That episode has finished playing - why is it there? It’s not even recently played!

I don’t even know why they have recently played items on the Listen Now tab. It’s hard to think of anything I’m less likely to want to listen to now than something I listened to recently.

That screen truly is a mess. It should show unplayed episodes of stuff I’ve subscribed to, in the order I’ve set for the series. Pretty simple.

I've jumped to Overcast and have been pretty happy so far. It even works well in CarPlay which was a concern at first. The only downside I've seen so far is no integration into workouts on my Apple Watch. I could simply swipe to see audio controls for podcasts that were playing.

14.5 + MacRumors recommendations = Switch to Overcast app.

Reminds me of Steve Jobs design of iDVD: Simple and does what it does very well.

I wonder how they can screw up every basic thing.
It’s like they never used a smartphone before.

and I wish it was just the podcast app, it’s everything they touch.
The software department just sucks.

I don’t understand all this glorification of Federighi, since he is in charge the software is a disaster. Bring back Bertrand Serlet and Scott Forstall please!

Did I miss something in the article? Are they bringing back the possibility to simply delete episodes that you don't want to listen to but also don't want to necessarily mark as played?
I'm confused...I've been deleting individual episodes with no problems. iPhone OS 14.5.1
