Hello! I hope you're doing well.

I have an iPhone XR which I didn't feel I needed updating for quite some time. I am on version 13.4.1.
Lately I have a few app updates that won't install since they say I need the latest iOS version, and to add to that I really find some of the privacy options introduced in more recent iOS version quite attractive.

Having said all that how is the performance and battery life like with the newer iOS releases on the iPhone XR?

Thanks!

For the first time ever owning an iPhone (since 2008), I had terrible battery life with my xR on 14.7.1 so I rolled back to 14.7 and it's back to normal. You might not have the same experience, but it might be worth reading through some of the other iOS 14 threads here, or search for iPhone xR in the this iOS 14 forum.

I don’t do all the updates, but my 2yo XR seems mostly unaffected when I do. This year I started having heavy drain problems - and oddly weeks/months after last iOS update. Think I finally tracked it to the Reddit App so moved to 14.7.1 and Apollo (for Reddit) and the last 2 weeks have as good been as ever. Point being that sometimes it’s a rogue app.

Battery wise, iOS 13 is significantly better than iOS 14. I would suggest, no need to update, unless you really have to.

Hard to say for sure about battery life since the phone is another year older. Mine has certainly gotten worse since launch day but I attribute it more to it being 2.5 years old rather than a particular version of iOS. As far as performance, it seems to be just as good as ever as best as I can tell. I would say update to get the latest security enhancements and if you really need the best battery possible get Apple to replace it for you. Mine is at 88% life for the record.
