Is it just me or... why not prevent apps from reading the copy/paste buffer without specific user consent (or at least make that an option, I can understand/imagine there might be some specific instances where users want automatic pasting of the buffer, though I’d guess that would be a small minority)?

Telling me an app is being naughty is good - but preventing them from being able to be naughty in the first place is better, surely?

Well it is better than nothing so I can applaud Apple for this.
I think they do not want to give the option to prevent it notifying apps because it acts as a deterrent to stop people snapshoting private DM's , kik sessions and 'premium' snapchats protecting those "industries"..

I feel sorry for android users, Google will just mine the data without your consent and add it to the deep learning supercomputer meat grinder to build a bigger online fingerprint of you..

Wow, Starbucks app reads my clipboard... for what?
Potentially to fill in gift card codes or something like that that some might copy from an email or somewhere else to then add in the app?

No app on any OS has any business accessing the clipboard, unless the user takes the action to paste to the app. Apple needs to implement security controls that allow the user to control this, like it does with location data.

Just discovered Gumtree doing the slimy behaviour as well when opened, it’s doing it from the last opened app too, disgraceful

There is a good layman’s explanation of this in the “Skeptics with a K” podcast. Episode #280, roughly about the 30 minute mark. Starts off with cookies and how they were manipulated then onto how Ios14 found the clipboard issue.

I’ve just been alerted to Outlook reading my clipboard. I’m using latest versions of the iOS 14 beta and Outlook. I thought something was up when Microsoft rang me to confirm my identity after just scrolling past the app. I can now repeat this every time I switch to Outlook.

Outlook lasted from Safari

Funny thing is I cannot actually paste anything into an email. That might just be my employer’s security settings, however.

For anyone else that is annoyed with the Copy From feature, please sign this petition so that we might get Apple to create it as an option that we can turn on and off.
