iOS 15.1 ― Bug Fixes, Changes, and Improvements

I'm facing a small issue, which was present with previous iOS 15.0.2: when I visit the storage usage within Settings app, it keeps calculating and never shows anything. I have restarted my device (iPhone XR) but that didn't make any difference. Anyone else?

11 was terrible though - I remember even in the March the next year, notifications still had clipped text and the UI was janky.

I agree that software is hard and perfection is never possible. This isn't meant as a disparagement to the teams that work in Apple's engineering, either.

Pulling right back, I guess I've got two complaints:

1) I really feel that Apple now needs to make the x.0 launch akin to an agile style MVP - a release which supports that fall's hardware launches plus any significant UX changes.

Then the other stuff can come through the year, when it's properly ready.

2) Is that internet distribution of software has lead to a 'launch with it being mostly OK for most people and we can patch the edge cases and optimise it later' culture.

So regular people who update when their OS tells them to do so are essentially entered into an unofficial mass beta programme. This is not cool.

It's not just a problem with Apple, of course - you see it in AAA games (these are probably the worst culprits). I'd just like to see an end to this.

Apple has already adopted to some extent what you are proposing. Rather than ship SharePlay or Universal Control at launch (when, presumably, those would have presented suboptimal experiences) they waited.

And you raise another limiting factor in your reference to AAA games: talent. Just because Apple has a lot of money to work with does not translate into having all the talent it needs. All the big software companies are bemoaning the lack of talent needed to move forward. That’s why they are pushing developer-related training even as early as late middle school. They are not doing this out of the goodness of their hearts. They genuinely are short handed in critical areas and trying to develop a bench.

The flaw in your logic is that not everyone views everything done with Safari as a mistake. I (and many others) like the bottom search bar.

The problem was making that change so it wasn’t a huge shock and confusing.

Also, I don’t think it’s fair to blast any company for what amounts to experiments during a beta. They got feedback and acted on it before release. I’d say that is exemplary behavior and exactly what we want to see.

Although they were shown at WWDC, I don’t recall it being specified that they’d come with 15.0?

They are still part of iOS 15, and Apple had Shareplay in some of the betas as they likely knew they wanted it in 15.1, so having it in some of the beta for 15.0 gave them a good amount of real world feedback.

So, to agree, Apple have taken that approach, but people might have just assumed they got moved as delayed, but in actuality they were staggering the new features, so as not to make the releases more problematic than they are.

Yes I get it. And I’m sure that their secret car and AVR projects have created an internal brain drain too.

But that notwithstanding…

I’d like Apple to approach a more Google / Android approach to updates. Basically agile. And state upfront at the WWDC keynote something like this:

Early fall : launch. Support for new devices. API foundations for this year plus a few easy to implement QoL minor features & fixes

I’d even go as far to say that a major version should only appear on new devices first with older devices getting it a few weeks later.

Late fall: major feature drop 1 (as an incentive to get regular people to upgrade). Plus - new emojis!

Early spring: major feature drop 2 and (likely) support for the new hardware that often is released around this time.

And between these, bug fixes.

Sure, this is way more conservative than what Apple does now. But I’d contend that:

1) It would be more successful than their current approach where they seem to be aiming to release all of the WWDC features in the fall and gradually announce that they’re coming later when it’s clear that they’re not ready.

2) Basically, Apple’s current approach just isn’t working well and is producing excessively buggy and badly optimised software.

Some have said it works it self out usually after 72 hours or so with this update ..

As for your second item, are you meaning on the Lock Screen? Or just whilst actively using the phone & getting a notification?

Either way, the issues mentioned, if genuine, does not warrant the hyperbolic statement nature of your post.

I have tested on multiple devices (mine and my friends/family) and cannot go from mini call bar to FULL call screen. It just opens up the expanded options of the mini call bar. It's really confusing.

The second item, its when actively using the phone and getting a notification.


I have had these issues for a long time and do not think it is fair for you to say whether I have exaggerated what I'm saying or not. These devices are first and foremost Mobile Phones and struggle operate effectively like them. It is also worth mentioning that I am experiencing other bugs (newer ones specific to 15.1) that are actually breaking changes.

Facetime buggy in more ways than one in this update. Often I answer a call and cannot hear or see the other person. Just see their initials on the screen instead.

Craig Federighi (I think) made the announcement or statement to somebody (Viticci??) sometime in the second half of 2020 that Apple was going to string out the tentpole features over the course of the full OS year.

Ahh I was thinking of only WWDC this year. Still, we’re seeing them do it! Though I guess cos they haven’t explicitly said that, people assumed SharePlay & UC were delayed.
 
Since updating my iPad Pro, the Photos app has been showing the following. It never moves. Doesn’t matter how long I leave it plugged in.

I have an incredibly new and annoying issue with Apple Music: I am a chronic skipper of songs when I listen to recommendations. Now occasionally my iPhone goes into a stuck skip button mode and skips through all songs without playing them (like the skip button gets stuck).

Anyone else? It literally never stops skipping when this happens, I have to kill the app & wait a bit to resume normal playback (or pick another playlist).

I have an iPhone 11 and after settling in I end the day with around 15% less battery life than I did with 14.8. I went directly from 14.8 to 15.1 DFU restore and set up as new.

Does anyone experience this behaviour with the battery?

With 15.0.2 all was fine 🤔.
