As someone who is Deaf, I am extremely excited for this update. Some of my extended family members have android smartphones. I'd have to text them instead of being able to FaceTime them to talk to them. I can't make phone calls as the normal human being would. I would have to download an app that's compatible with both phones and sometimes the app won't work very well. So being able to FaceTime somebody who has an android phone is a huge game changer for me. I'm also really excited about the Mic Modes in FaceTime. I wear Cochlear implants and a lot of times background noises are something that is extremely difficult for me when I'm talking to somebody. My implants picks up on almost everything and to have this filter out background noise, is a big game changer for me. Extremely excited for all of the FaceTime updates since it has been long overdue! All of the FaceTime updates will be super beneficial for me and my Cochlear Implants!

Wow this is surprising. Seems like Apple wants to compete more with Zoom if they are opening FaceTime to the web for other platforms.
GOOD! :) Zoom has been abhorrent with privacy, but pulled ahead because the UI sucks less than the competition. I was hoping they might introduce an Android app, but let's see how slick they can make the web experience -- it might be solid.

This is sweet. I can see us using this with a couple of people. I assume you’ll be able to share the link directly from the FaceTime app so it’ll be pretty seamless.

Possibly, but unless you are the only Pro in your company, or your company uses Apple exclusively, it sounds to me as if you will always need multiple services because only a part of your workforce can initiate calls. If that's the case, why not go with Zoom or Teams all the way?
I think this is right. Apple will only let you go so far and this is the line in the sand they've drawn.

Would be super un-Apple like to not share the link from the application.

this is smart because people who are on android might get a small taste of what iOS might bring and get people to move over.

I dont think so, people are set on their ways... better bet would be to include them all. icloud for windows has existed for years now for photo's, email, etc.... why they holding out on imessage is beyond me.

Tim must have gotten tired of having to use Zoom for business meetings o_O
I just said yesterday that Apple employees using zoom or another 3rd party platform to discuss secret products and other sensitive information was likely one of the reasons the whole work from home thing would be problematic. This solves that one.

I'm not trying to be a d***, but what exactly would that be?

Apart from the Shareplay and social features, which look neat, would have been great 12 months ago but will hopefully be far less important when iOS 15 comes out and beyond, I don't particularly see what might entice someone to switch?

With all of the companies being lax on security and privacy it may make more companies lean into Apple devices to have access. Chrome has been making inroads that block out other browsers, well as these hacks continue to escalate I believe it will show that Apple’s model is safer because less data collected means less that can be stolen or just sold to nefarious characters and used to figure out how to scam and phish to gain access to systems.

Now that it’s on the web, it’s probably only a matter of time until people make apps for it on each platform. But yeah, clever of apple to make it so that they can’t make new calls… very crafty

As the anti-competitive lawsuits pile up we will be seeing more and more of Apple's walls opening up, like this one. I've been wondering when they would start loosening the reins. Much better to do it voluntarily than to be forced through lawsuits, which they could stand to lose more through since they have no control of the verdicts. Next will be Messenger.

Honestly just the execution of it all. Everything it does it does very well with as much polish as possible, and I cannot say the same for any of my android phones. They’re good phones too, but we’re basically comparing beemers with corollas here

What a bad idea. This would certainly not convince the international WhatsApp crowd
Worldwide conditions and terms are changing for WhatsApp , so you have to accept certain terms that won’ t guarantee your privacy , so perhaps now it is the right time.
