And where would the stalker plant the SE, if I may ask you?
Hey there, wait, I want to plant a phone on you, so I can stalk you; don’t worry I’ve turned it off, so you won’t notice it.
Stalking is of marginal concern. It is so rare that designing stuff like this around it is super silly.

Wonder if this will only work for newer devices with the U1?

I already find AirTags BlueTooth are draining the battery faster on my 8-plus.

I have this amazing metal key which offers this same functionality - it works for weeks, months... even years after my phone has died!
Some people are Techie and some people are not. JS (JS="just saying", for un-techie people)

It'd be more accurate to say "some people prefer electronic gadgets for their own sake, and some people do not".

Since I make my living as a Linux sysadmin, I'm about as "techie" as one gets (on MacRumors, anyway...). 😁

Another step in a long line of "computing devices that do things I didn't tell them to do". A device that can be tracked when "off" means it's never really off. A device that can be tracked when the battery is "dead" doesn't really have a dead battery - a reserve of power is hidden from the user. In essence, things like "off", "dead", "delete", etc. don't serve the user, they simply hide the true status of devices and data from the users. All in the name of "helping" us.

Okay, if you say so.

Additionally, who is it that isn't noticing that there is a six inch phone that isn't theirs on them? Not very subtle.

Haha true! But helps me be one step closer to the dream of only needing one object when leaving the house. Can now use the phone to pay for things, unlock/start the car, and unlock the front door when you get home again. It's about consolidation/simplifying for me! But yes, metal key has been reliable!

I was able to turn on "Notify when left behind" for my iPhone, but when trying to do this for my Apple Watch (on WatchOS 8 Dev Beta), the option is greyed out and won't let me turn on [[see attached photo]]. I can't find a resolution to activate this option.

What stops someone from buying an iPhone SE, turning it off, and planting it on someone they want to stalk? Obviously the privacy implications of these features have not been thought out.
While nothing is outside the realm of possibility, there are cheaper, smaller and more effective devices And ways to stalk someone.

So by ‘live location’ do they mean it’ll move in real time, like WhatsApp, rather than the current and mostly useless refresh every few minutes? If so this is great news - right now it updates so infrequently you often find the person has arrived etc before the Find My app keeps up.

Re-posting this because I didn't get response...

I'm not sure how that's working. Phone I'm testing on does have a U1 chip.
I did the following experiment with my two iPhones, neither of which has a U1 chip:

1. Turned OFF the cellular and WiFi on iPhone 7. Left Bluetooth on.
2. Turned OFF the WiFi on iPhone XR. Left cellular and Bluetooth on.
3. Drove to nearby shopping center.
4. Looked at Find My on iPhone XR. It shows correction location for iPhone 7 and said location last updated "now."
5. Drove to nearby park.
6. Looked at Find My on iPhone XR. It shows correction location for iPhone 7 and said location last updated "now."

Background: Both iPhones have iOS 14.4.2 and are both registered to the same Apple ID.

It's obvious the iPhones work like AirTags by piggybacking other iPhones' Bluetooth to report location. This is creepy.

Edit: I did further experiments and learned the only way to stop my iPhone 7 from reporting its movement is to turn off Bluetooth or turn off the location service. Also the iPhone 7 will report its movements even when it is nowhere near my iPhone XR.

Yeah it’s the same problem with the M1 Macs as well. Both my watch and my M1 air says not supported

It sounds like a privacy nightmare.

I‘m not really wondering if but when a third party will use the Find My network to track people.

Also, it probably won’t be long until US three-letter agencies will acquire access to the system and its data (though as these things are usually done secretly and prohibit Apple’s disclosure, it may take some time until we hear of it or receive credible confirmation).
All this is really just baseless speculation, and is contrary to available information. Apple can’t tie the location data to devices or users, as those are encrypted.

Tracking while phone is off…makes you think, don’t it.
Yeah, that it’s a nice feature. It’s limited to available remaining battery life, of course.

This is absolutely great. The fact that the iPhone remains trackable even after being erased may be a very useful feature against thieves.

Ever since I updated to iOS 15, Find My has not been working like it should when it comes to tracking location of people on my list. According to the update it is supposed to show continuous streaming updates, but instead it takes very long to update anything. It doesn’t even search right away. Anyone else? It sometimes takes several minutes to update. Huge step backwards.

My Apple Watch S4 says it's not supported. Is it because it's older? Anyone else seeing this on the S4?

"A wiped ‌iPhone‌ would not show up in the ‌Find My‌ app, but now, erasing an ‌iPhone‌ no longer works that way. If Activation Lock is on (i.e., it wasn't wiped using your username and password to disable Activation Lock), it's tied to your account and locatable using ‌Find My‌."

What if the thief turns it off after factory resetting the iphone.
How long time do i have til this Find My function stops working.

This feature apparently does not seem to work, i lost my iphone 4 days ago, and it only updated the last location my phone was the morning t got stolen.... after a day the device went offline, even before it did, the only location update was in the morning.... upto now..i expected the device to be tracked even if it ws off because live location is enabled even when off.... and yes it was a 12 promax withthe latest update of ios and all settings in place.
regards
