Very curious about the wallet Home Keys announced at WWDC. I already have a Homekit enabled smart lock (Yale Assure). Will it be compatible to create Home Keys in my wallet? Or I would need to change the lock hardware?

If you have any infos about that I would be very interested. Thank you!

They showed a snapshot of all the lock manufacturers that are going to implement this. Most I’ve never heard of before. I have a Yale Assure with August Connect and unfortunately I didn’t see Yale or August (August is a subdivision of Yale) in that snapshot. Im happy with Yale/August’s Auto Unlock feature but this functionality would be great as well.

It’s probably gonna work with NFC (or UWB maybe?) so likely new hardware would be needed. Don’t think many of the smart locks on the market have the hardware for this.

Well August is itself a subdivision of ASSA ABLOY who was on that list, so one can hope. It’s not a dealbreaker for me and I will certainly not change my smart lock for that, but the modular approach of Yale Assure give me hope that they can release a new HomeKit module with NFC. I don’t know, I’ll look forward to it

You know, you’re right. I completely forgot about the module and didn’t know about ASSA AMBLOY so it very well is possible. I saw Shlage there so assumed that either Yale or August would also. Those are the names that people know more.

Are there any Home Keys compatible smart locks on the market yet? If there are I can’t find them!

Pretty sure not or we woulda definitely heard something from Apple Insider, HomeKit Authority or HomeKit news. Would’ve also seen early reviews by the prominent HomeKit YouTubers. I follow all of them closely.

On a side note, wonder if it’s delayed because of the chip shortage. I know BMW deleted the digital key from at least the 5 Series because of this and I’m assuming they use the same NFC technology.
