There are a slew of new features in iOS 15, so many in fact that Apple did not have time to cover all of them during today's keynote event.

One of these new features is a built-in authenticator that will let iOS devices be used to generate verification codes for additional sign-in security.

Right now, app-based two-factor authentication is handled by third-party apps like Authy and Google Authenticator, but now Apple is building this functionality right into iOS so you won't need a separate app.
Generate verification codes needed for additional sign-in security. If a site offers two-factor authentication, you can set up verification codes under Passwords in Settings -- no need to download an additional app. Once set up, verification codes autofill when you sign in to the site.
Apple says that you can set up verification codes under Passwords in the Settings app, and once set up, verification codes will autofill when you sign into a site, which will make using two-factor authentication on an iPhone or iPad much more streamlined.

This feature is available on iOS 15, iPadOS 15, and macOS Monterey.

Wait so it says "with Google Authenticator," does that mean that the client (in this case iOS 15) will work with Google's service? That's nice.

Wow that's cool! Will this authentication feature allow tap two-factor authentication like you can do with the Duo Mobile app? (instead of using a code...). And will it be in MacOS also? I'd love to not have to go grab my phone when doing two-factor authentication on my mac...

I'm really hoping to be able to generate passwords for apps and websites, for apps and websites that haven't implemented password fields correctly.

edit: They did it, you can now create a generate a new password when you bring up the passwords search sheet.

This is great, I wonder if this will make a lot of 1Password users leave... the only reason I use 1Password is because of 2FA support and because of multi-OS support. I could do without multi-OS support since if Apple handles my passwords with codes, I will be paying for 1Password only for Android support, which I would stop.

I wonder if I can just generate a code that I can then use on another device (e.g. Windows PC) to log into a website. Or if this feature only works when logging into sites/apps on iPhone/iPad/Mac (using AutoFill).

This is me right now but I'm wondering how friendly this would be on the PC. 1Password has 2FA and can automatically copy those codes to the clipboard and paste them which is a huge time saver.
