In my particular case and needs, Messages app continues to be a useless and unnecessary app on my iPhone.

Maybe it has been requested at tedium, and maybe there is a reason it can't be done...but all I need is to be able to mark a message as unread.
I don't want to pin it, just mark it as unread.

Please.

I guess Apple related news sites and bloggers feel compelled to release detailed "upcoming software release" features as soon as they test them, but honestly, by the time I get the public version I will have forgotten all the articles posted here. For most of us, IOS 15 doesn't exist yet.

iMessage needs a way to name and identify a temporary person I am messaging with. Currently the only options I have are "add to existing contact" or make a new contact. Often I message with people I do not want or need to put in my contact list.

How about ARCHIVING iMessages. You know like... important ones with info or from years ago that you don't want to delete but also don't need to endlessly scroll through....

Sounds like a bunch of (mostly) useless bloat
I agree. iOS 14.8...oops I mean "iOS 15" sounds like a real snoozer.

Where are the disappearing messages? Or shareable public group links? Signal is innovating like crazy. Meanwhile the Messages team at Apple is probably patting themselves on the back for "Shared with You".

I have to wonder, are there really that many people who are able to use iMessage with every single friend and family member they have?
Everyone that I communicate with regularly via my phone is also using an iPhone, and thus all the Messages effects and features, and FaceTime are all always available. Yes, that is just one data point, but you asked.

I have a mix of Android and iOS users in my friends and family circle, and thus can't invest myself too much in fun silly iMessage stuff because I can't use it with over half of my contacts. I wish Apple would put together an iMessage app for Android, much like Google has equivalents to their Android apps on iOS.
I have a mix, too, and my biggest chat partners (my siblings) run a mix of iOS and Android (though, outside of my siblings, more of my chat partners use iOS over Android). The biggest “iMessage feature” my iOS siblings and I use is the reaction feature, which is actually backwards compatible with SMS as well. That said, we’re not a bunch of teenagers any more, and I can’t think of a time when we’d seriously use many of the iMessage features, like chat bubble animation.

In iPadOS 15 beta, the Messages app displays a pair of thumbnail pages at the bottom, which show the current and last message thread I posted on. Is there any additional purpose for these two thumbnails? I’ll attach an image of the bottom of the screen page.

Forget my comment. I just realized it’s because I had two different Messages windows open (one hidden in the background), and this allows me to switch between them as part of the iPadOS 15 multi-window feature. Closing one of the windows got rid of the icons. It’s actually a nice feature.
