I’d say stay on 14. There’s nothing saying that they won’t have a “required update” to 15 after 16’s release. They likely won’t reach back to 14, so you should be good there.
iOS 15 had a difficult time updating from 14 on my 6s. That’s a sign right there Apple is unlikely to support it under 16. Sad thing is there will likely be millions of those out there that are still usable. I personally use mine as a backup when I’m charging my X. Apple should consider providing maintenance support for iOS 15 on devices that still run it.

You’ll know by next June (to be safe). I know I’m not touching iOS 16 until then that’s for sure.

iOS 15 had suffered from a slower adoption rate compared to iOS 14, partially due to it being a relatively smaller update and an initial handful of bugs that impacted users when the update first launched.
Absolutely false. This could describe any of the last 5 years of updates.

iOS 15's adoption was slowed by being optional and allowing users to remain on iOS 14, something they've never done before.

Imagine iOS support doesn’t drop as aggressive as apple did, Tons of people using iPhone 5c and earlier, iPad 3 and earlier would stick to iOS 5/6 easier and with higher percentage, even if the app support is dropped.

Otoh, that 90% is mostly good for devs and apple, and that’s about it.
LOL. No. There aren't "tons" of them. And the ones that are, are not interacting with anything new. They aren't downloading new apps. They are holding on to a phone that makes calls and sends SMS, and they don't need anything more.

In the modern smartphone era, you're pretty much forced to update every time.
perhaps you wait for a .1 or .2 release, but holding onto an old OS is just not sustainable.
I'm quite sure using iOS 14 in 2023 will be quite inconvenient.

I don't understand your comment. How is using iOS 14 "quite inconvenient" or an old iOS "not sustainable"?

Like the iPhone, iOS is basically a mature platform with incremental changes year over year. One could argue that with security updates and ongoing app support, most users would be perfectly content.

My biggest qualm is that Apple should stop major yearly releases at this point. Just give us improvements as you make them.

they have been.
Most of the biggest new features announced last year at WWDC didn’t come in 15.0, they came as they were ready.
When they announce new operating systems, they aren’t announcing big huge updates that all come on one day anymore.
They’re announcing a roadmap of features that should come out within the next year.

I am using 15.5.1 on my iPhone Pro 13 but sticking with 14.8 on my iPad Air 4, iPad Pro 2017 and 2019. The home screen layout is far better on 14.8 for me and I get to keep my Dark Sky widget on the iPads.

Well, my 9th gen iPad came with ios15, so no choice there :D I also have no context for anything from there, to ios8 since I never updated my older iOS devices

5c and earlier support was dropped cause they are 32bit devices and iOS moved to 64bit only.
iOS 15 supports 6S and newer which are almost 7 years old
I cant imagine people willingly use a almost 9 year old smart phone
I was using a 1st gen iPad Air. Came out in 2013, but I got a used device in 2016. It was on ios8 and I never updated from that. Even though I have a new, 9th gen iPad I got last year, I still use that from time to time for "legacy apps and games". But there, I've had it for 6 years (with the device being 9 years old by release date).

I still carry my iPod Touch 5 (rel. Oct. 2012) b/c it's slim and fits nicely in my pocket, and it uses the same lightning connector as my new iPad. But these days, it's a glorified flashlight and calculator. I probably stopped using it around 6 to 7 years later

My sister just upgraded from an iPhone 6 to an SE 2022, and it was running iOS 12.whatever. She was doing fine on it, just didn't want to replace the battery again.

The 6 was only her second iPhone (first was an original iPhone 2g). Some people just don't care about smartphones.

More power to you i guess.

🤔 Not sure if serious but good luck with that when landlines are switched off.

I have a Bakelite rotary wall phone in the basement hooked up via an ObiHai to Google voice! I have a bit of fascination with old analog phones.

Haha I’m the same, when we replaced the phone system at work I acquired a couple of the old ATAs. I now have a wired phone and a fax machine too, no idea why but it was fun to set up and test 😂

Sometimes "being poor" is not a "willing" situation - but that being said some people are stuck with older tech for various reasons.

There are sooooo many billions of us on this planet, not everyone can use a device newer than 10 years.

(A lady I know from Indonesia and another from the Phillipines both buy older laptops here with Linux, and older Android phones with custom newer ROMs to send back home. $25 for an old phone or laptop that gets someone online and connected who otherwise has no options is a hella real thing)

My 12.9 M1 iPad pro came with ios15 when I boight it or I probably would’ve just kept ios14 with it.
I was using ios14 on my 12 pro max until just recently. I was basically forced to upgrade as I bought an AW7 (upgrade from AW4) and the watchOS version on it required ios15. Otherwise I would have stayed with ios14.

I have my backup 7plus on ios14.8.

I inherited the 6 I bought for my grandmother in 2015. The last smartphone I’ll ever buy, it sits on my living room desk, aside her 1940s Bakelite rotary landline which not only still works, but performs (makes calls) better than the iphone.
Untill all landline service is canceled (because the switch it's connected to get decommissioned) ( in Norway this wil happen this year or next), i doubt the voip adapters support rotary phones
