Apple today updated its iOS 15 installation numbers for the first time in five months, giving us a clearer picture of just how many devices are running the latest update nine months after it launched and ahead of the introduction of iOS 16.

iOS 15 is now installed on 89 percent of iPhones introduced in the last four years, while 10 percent continue to run iOS 14. Just one percent have an earlier version of iOS installed.

When taking into account iPhones released more than four years ago, 82 percent of all devices are running iOS 15. 14 percent are running iOS 14, and four percent are running an earlier version of iOS.

Apple last updated its iOS 15 installation numbers in January, and adoption rates have risen since then. Back in January, just 72 percent of iPhones introduced in the last four years were running iOS 15. Since January, Apple has added multiple new features through iOS updates, including iOS 15.4, a major update that brought Face ID with a Mask support, Universal Control, and new emojis.

As for iPadOS, 79 percent of all iPads introduced in the last four years are running iPadOS 15, while 18 percent still have iPadOS 14 installed, and three percent are running an earlier version of iPadOS. 72 percent of all iPads, including those released more than four years ago, have iPadOS 15 installed. 18 percent are running iPadOS 14, and 10 percent are running an earlier version of iPadOS.

Apple splits its installation numbers into separate groups because there are still devices in the wild that are not capable of running ‌iOS 15‌ or ‌iPadOS 15‌. iOS 15 and iPadOS 15 installation numbers had lagged behind prior updates like iOS 14 and iPadOS 14 since launch, but things have evened out.

In June 2021, iOS 14 was installed on 90 percent of iPhones released in the last four years, while 85 percent of all devices were running the update, which is not too far off of the iOS 15 installation numbers.

Earlier today, we shared iOS 15 installation numbers from Mixpanel. Mixpanel estimated that the update was installed on 90 percent of devices, which was close to Apple's own numbers.

Next Monday, Apple will introduce iOS 16 and iPadOS 16, and work on iOS 15 will taper off as Apple works to get the new software ready for a fall launch. We'll get a few bug fix updates before iOS 16 launches, but we are not expecting any more major features to come in iOS 15.

People here are ridiculous, they think all software is expected to be bug free and they don't want to upgrade even though iOS 15 is the same as 14. They hear about one person complaining about the issue and suddenly it's the worst iOS version ever.
After having iOS updates cripple devices, with no recourse to correct it, I am now extra cautious when it comes to updates.

Unless an update has a new feature that I really want to have, I try to ignore it.

It might be higher if they hadn’t done that weird thing of saying, in the keynote even I believe, that if you didn’t want iOS 15 yet you can stay on 14 a while. And then apparently a while meant about one month, just a single point release I believe. I bet they won’t do that again. That didn’t make any sense, if you’re concerned about .0 releases just wait until .1

But more to the point, why wouldn’t every iPhone user upgrade to the latest version. The one percent still on 13 or below must be doing it purpose, is the default setting not to automatically download and install, or at least prompt the living hell out of you?

I was super stoked for so-called on-device Siri. I even installed the RC to get it sooner.

Turns out it’s still just Siri, I can’t tell a difference.

Interesting that an update (I’m assuming a final release, maybe a .0 release?) actually bricked your phone. Maybe it already had hardware issues?

No they aren’t. iOS 15 is a buggy mess compared to iOS 14. From all the glitches, to the choppy frame rates, and yes bugs galore. iOS 14 wasn’t perfect but it was a whole lot better than 15 is. I should know, I have two devices running both. I also still have an iPhone 5 running iOS 6. iOS has been a disjointed mess since iOS 7, however 14 was one of the most stable versions since then from my experience.

The update didn't brick my device, just crippled it.

The worse case for me was iOS9 on my iPad Mini 2. iOS 8 was great in the Mini 2, no problems at all and great battery life.

After updating to iOS9, the device slowed to a crawl, especially on Safari. The battery life suffered a lot.

It behaved like it was perpetually out of RAM, and page swapped everything. Safari was literally unusable.

iOS 10 improved on things greatly, but not even close to the rock solid experience of iOS 8.

I still use my iPad Mini 2 everyday, and it is still on iOS 10.

Because IOS14 has zero issues ?
iOS 15 has innovative magical new issues.

Apple is slipping a bit because the number used to be higher. It's important because newer device owners buy more apps. The people just buying an iPhone abd hanging into it 5+ years probably stopped buying new apps a while ago.

Apple cares about developers selling their apps so Apple gets that sweet 30% of the action. Everyone having the lost up to date iOS means devs have easier support and can use the latest features.
