Apple alongside the second-generation Apple TV 4K debuted a redesigned version of the Siri Remote, which is now available to customers with new ‌Apple TV‌ orders and as a $60 standalone replacement for the original ‌Siri‌ Remote. In lockstep with the hardware change, iOS 15 also includes a redesigned Apple TV Siri Remote interface in the Control Center.

In iOS 14, the current Remote UI takes cues from the previous-generation Siri Remote, with Menu, Siri, Play/Pause and Home buttons below a large gesture pad, mirroring the glass touch surface.

Likewise, the new UI in many ways resembles the redesigned new-generation Siri Remote, and now includes Back, Mute, Power, and channel buttons, while the iPhone's physical Side/Power button becomes the Siri button.

Despite these welcome changes in the iOS 15 beta, there are still some bugs that Apple needs to iron out to get the new Siri Remote working consistently, so it may not be wise to update to the iOS 15 public beta as soon as it becomes available in July just to start using it. iOS 15 will be officially released in the fall.

Great News. Will it support IR or only CEC?

In tvOS 14.6 Volume + - using iOS remote app will not work with most TVs since they require IR.

Little known fact, generally TVs need IR for Volume + - and Mute, even if they have HDMI CEC. TVs generally don't see themselves as an audio device so they ignore incoming CEC commands for Volume Up Down and Mute.

In tvOS 14.6 the remote app will not work for volume (using the volume buttons on the side of the iPhone) for most people getting audio from their TV, since the iPhone does not have an IR transmitter. tvOS 15 could fix this by Apple TV using the Siri remote to send IR commands assuming Siri remote is pointing towards the device.

Does anyone know if the remote App in iOS 15 can control Volume and Mute on TVs?

I guess nobody in the world is planning to install the beta of iOS 15 just to use it 😅

Would not be bad to actually see what is happening on the screen
(use case: starting a new episode for a child complaining in front of the screen)

What would the channel buttons be for on an Apple TV?
I’ve never used any of them but maybe for stuff like YouTube tv, Hulu tv, Sling etc? I don’t even know if those apps operate that way, and why anyone still goes channel to channel instead of using the guide….. Even if so, kind of seems like a smaller case use to have its own buttons but maybe not.

It should also be noted there was always 2 remotes. The Apple TV Remote app and the remote app from control center, which while similar were different. With one being more reliable and slightly better interface. Now the TV remote app just shows a message saying it will only existing in control center now. Which I think is a good thing so they can just focus on one.

Don't know. Doesn't seem to do anything. I assumed would function as up and down in some apps or the main ui, but doesn't, at least not yet. I know there are some countries or places that do have siri compatible custom remotes with channel button so imagine it will work for some, but certainly odd having it so prominent where it will be of no use for so many. Unless of course AppleTV is going to be updated for more channel like experience?

Why does this not exist for the Watch?
Remote App for Apple Watch? There always has been and still is. But of course because of the size and less buttons it's more limited experience of course than a full size iphone. I've used in the rare case where I didn't have either my phone or remote. If you use often recommend creating a complication for you watch for quick access but downside with complications is if yo u are crossing your arms or such easy to invoke it and cause issues.

That old remote app is too basic. I don't understand why I can use Siri on my iPhone, iPad and HomePods to play music on the Apple TV, but not from the Watch. This is why I want the Siri remote to come to the Watch. It would also be nice to have volume control.

I like being able to use the Siri Remote on my phone but I always have to grab my actual TV remote for something since my phone doesn’t have an IR blaster in it.

Can anyone confirm if the remote App in iOS 15 can control Volume and Mute on their TV?
