Just looking to confirm that everyone/anyone else is having this issue. in the latest beta Apple complete removed all external display options. if you plug in a dongle all you get is generic screen mirroring. all of the options, full screen, extended display, display position are all completely removed from this beta. I also get OS crashes about 1 out of 3 times I plug in the display dongle or remove and reattach the magic keyboard.

For reference, running 16.1b3 - iPad Pro 12.9 5th Gen M1, magic keyboard, apple display dongle. tried with Lenovo dongle, 3 different monitors, 3 different display cables, tried external mouse. it's 100% a iOS issue at this point.

Submitted feedback with logs and screen shots, just wondering if others have the same issue. I didn't happen to try under beta 1 & 2 so not sure if it's been broken a long time or not... nothing on the webs about it.

Same issue here. After installing the current public beta I connected my 5th gen M1 12.9 iPad Pro my external display, and I am seeing black bars. All the options in settings>display are gone. I thought I was going crazy, and spent a good amount of time searching the internet for a solution and couldn’t find anything. Hope Apple will fix this in the next beta release. :(

Latest beta 16.1 beta 5 still broken. Not looking good, I think apply might be backing out of giving us a productive iPad Pro.

Yeah this totally sucks. This is literally the single most useful feature I was looking forward to.

Same here - thought they moved it to another place - but nope....
Only mirroring (for now) is available it seems

Until Apple announce the availability of external display support… it is unfortunately unavailable.

Luckily, I‘m still able to use Stage Manager on an external display without the pillar box black bars because I’m not on the latest betas.

External display support is one of the few things that I actually want from IpadOS 16. Hopefully it comes back soon

Apple stated it will return later this year to M1 iPads.

Probably in the first beta after the public release of iPadOS 16.

I’m very happy I had the ISPW file of the last beta containing external display support.
Not updating until it's back in the betas.

Apple said that external display support will be coming in a "future release," not in 16.1. So yes, it'll stay broken in the 16.1 betas– the earliest case would be for 16.2.

Hmm
video released by Apple today shows external display support around the 7:40 mark

Video of what, new ipad pro? Yea I saw that too, but you know, ipad pro’s gonna be available on 26th or sth, so you can’t check or test it at the moment. I just checked it with my ipad air 5.
Oh and todays release is actualy a release candidate.

Isn’t extended desktop on external display supported only on M1 after all?
Also RC will probably be the GM so it should had been there for M1s at least.

Maybe the ad was running on M2 with 16.2 beta or something…

Ipad air 5 is m1. Extended external display was here two betas ago but they took it away in the last beta and it’s still not here in this rc.

That is frustrating.

I am not overly fussed about stage manager but combined with external display support, it finally makes the iPad more usable for me and towards a laptop replacement.

I have done without a Macbook for 6 months now, relying on a Mac Mini for a few tasks my iPad was unable to do but I really want to get away from using the Mac Mini at all.

Hopefully it comes soon

Probably it will return in 16.2 first beta

Yeah, as @Ultracyclist mention it could come in a 16.2 beta. But I do find it odd there hasn't been a 16.2 beta already since M2 iPad Pro has been marketed to use external support.

Well, as weird as it looks I think the explanation is quite simple.

The introduction page of iPadOS 16 is clear.

https://www.apple.com/ipados/ipados-16/features/
footnote 5 and 6 Coming later this year to m1 and later iPads.

So it's likely, to a point almost certain that upon release the M2 IPad Pro won't have external display support.
Best logical thinking leads to it being back in the next beta series, 16.2 beta 1.

That said, if, and I think it's most likely, they want to hold on to the "coming later THIS YEAR" part.

So, if the M2 iPad Pro won’t have upon release then why market in the video? And I know you are probably thinking… that its a feature that will be released later this year.

But I rewatched the video and at the end it doesn’t give any notice on Stage Manager with external display support being nonexistent on the M2 iPad Pro. That’s why I feel that its odd that 16.2 beta hasn’t been released yet.

Apple mentioned FreeForm is coming to iPadOS 16 later this year in the video, but no words on external display support for the M2 iPad Pro. The thing is… I’m currently using it and I’m completely okay with Apple waiting until they iron out the bugs. But I just don’t understand the dancing around it.

I’m not sure why Apple decided to remove it, but based on this image I think it’s pretty clear that external display support is coming later this year.

Maybe the if I close my eyes you don’t see me tactic?

Umm... I’ve read through forums that Stage Manager were buggy on 1080p monitors.

Could be… but let me ask you, what is your experience with Stage Manager on an external display? How many crashes do you get?

It’s been great for the most part. Some crashes here and there, but overall pretty cool. Once I knew what triggered the crashes I also knew how to avoid them.

So at this point I’m using it as a daily driver for both work and college.
