To me, watching sports via DVR is such a joy, I now prefer it over live. Starting a game an hour late and catching up to live TV late in the 4th quarter is one of life's most valuable hacks...to me. It saves me at least an entire day per year (probably two).

I understand it isn't for everyone. But I've been doing it since my original Tivo (btw...whatever happened to them?). And as long as I don't know the score, I can start a game many hours later and still get the same level of enjoyment -- it took a little while to get used to, but the benefits far outweigh the detriments.
I might give this a try then and see how I like it.

I'm missing something...

The point of watching sports is that it is entertainment. You are watching athletes competing...not just watching a scoreboard change its digits. And not knowing how the game ends (who wins) is part of the draw.

Yet we now have generations of people just watching scores? Where does this add value? So they can share/spoil the game for those of us who DVR the games and watch them on our own time (without commercials and idiotic commentary, and when our family time allows us...because, you know...priorities).

Folks - I really love watching football. But watching a game via DVR is a joy akin to having podcasts or audiobooks on my iPhone. It allows me to have more entertainment while still living a life.

Live scores ruin this.

I’m not super sports person, I like football too but never been in to most sports. But this strikes me as being for baseball fans. Baseball fans seem to like just scores and then watching the like 2 minutes of actual action later in highlights.

Omg it’s the only way. I can’t watch football live, sooooo many commercials and they are very repetitive on top of it. Plus it only takes like an hour and a half to watch a football game if you skip all the ads and halftime.

Lmao what in tarnation? You're obviously not a sports fan. I'd say 90% of the time its to keep tabs on other teams to know where your team is in the standings, and for people to play fantasy sports.
interesting no fantasty football app whether new or existing that uses live activities. it seems like such a natural fit....

Said no sports fan ever.

But seriously, I think you might be in a minority here. I get watching Live or watching on a recorded session from your DVR. But to be honest, many sports fans, casual or diehard, enjoy getting their updates from their phones when they are out and about and not able to watch live. As to the point of watching later, there are so many sources bombarding us with information (radio, Social Media, streaming news, etc), that I would rather get updated as the event is occurring than find out later what my team did which would spoil watching it anyways. For a game like Baseball, watching later isn't all that appealing.

The solution for your use case is to turn off any such functionality (if Apple automatically turns it on). I can't tell you how many times I am out to dinner with my wife and have a MLB complication on my Apple Watch or check the ESPN or MLB / NFL app or out for the day and want to keep up with my pro baseball and football teams. Now I don't have to launch an app to get that info. Win all around!

Hi folks….just testing out Live Sports scores on the new iOS beta 16.2. I'm just seeing this for the first time but so far so good!

See the series of screen shots below I set tonight’s Bull’s game up in the TV App and then what the scoring looks like on the Lock Screen on an iPhone 13 Pro.m Note that I had previously set up the Bulls as one of my favorite "local" teams in the News App — I am not sure if this is required though??

Step 1) I invoke the  TV App and see tonight’s Bulls NBA game on the Home Screen of the App.

Step 2) I simply tap on “Follow“ to enable Live Game Tracking for the Bulls game and a checkmark appears.

Step 3) Here’s what the Lock Screen looks like before the game starts:

Step 4) Here’s a shot of what the scoring looks like during the game so far.

Note the short "last score description" with the vertical bar to the right in the color of the scoring team! This is pretty cool.
Also, when you click on the Live Action scoring update, you have full access to the scoring history for the entire game which is very cool!

This is all pretty neat stuff!
Looking forward to trying this out more!

When they announce the new OS at WWDC, it has ALWAYS been a roadmap for the entire year. It was never designed to be "All of these things in .0". As long as the announced features show up before 17, they are "on time" in reality.
Apple's developers are pure trash now. -

Sports Alerts works really well for the NFL, but I’m really hoping that they add college football and college basketball soon.
In the mean time, as mentioned at the end of the article, use the Sports Alerts app (https://apps.apple.com/us/app/sports-alerts/id432450349). It works great right now. The Live Score feature is activated on a per-game basis. Just find a game that will start within the next 6 hours or currently in progress, of course. Hold your finger on the game entry or click the 3 dots and choose "Start Live Activity".

Sports Alerts – live scores for MLB, NFL, NBA, NHL, CFL, soccer, tennis, golf, NCAA football & basketball and more.

It's great that third party developers like Sports Alerts already support the feature.
For soccer fans out there these two also support Live Activities:

FotMob – Live tracking soccer scores from Lock Screen.
Scorespot - Soccer results on the Lock Screen.

I actually forgot about this until last night - "Where are these sports updates!?" (thought this was in 16.1) Saw 3rd party apps, this Live Scores so far is working well - testing on WC2022, notification comes in almost immediately ....but not the UI I saw and hoping.

....so, ok 16.2 it comes out. I guess??

Get FotMob. Working great. Especially for the World Cup! Lock screens amazing and dynamic island as well. I’m not even on a beta. Check it out 🙌

Are you referring to Apples own Live Activies support for (select) sports games that is indeed coming in iOS16.2 as included with the AppleTV app.

As far as third party sports apps I already mentioned a couple above and as you said they have Live Activity support which works well. If you need 'regular' lock screen notifications I think you can still have those as well by turning on notifications for those specific apps in your Settings app > Notifications > app you won't to be notified by.

Yeah. I can wait for 16.2 for these notifications, dedicated UI I've been seeing. I tried the one Sports Alerts app - pictured above that worked fairly well with USA soccer, the Eagles game and Sixers on Monday night.

No idea how I missed the post above (NBA, Pacers vs Bulls game notifications), the UI, notifications through Apple TV...that's what I'm waiting for.

The TV app currently only supports MLB, NBA and Premier League matches for Live Activites. It works great when I follow Sixers games, but for Eagles games, I use Sports Alerts and that works pretty well.

Hoping Apple starts supporting more sports leagues once 16.2 is released to the public (Maybe 16.3?)

Yeah I noticed it doesn't support NFL (I'll keep the other app for that just in case..I am usually home to watch the Eagles live anyway) but the MLB and NBA Apple notifications will be cool.

Is there a way to automatically enable all games for a certain team?

On the Apple TV Apple TV app (that sounds weird lol), I can follow my favorite teams, and the TV will then make these small notifications in the top corner when interesting stuff happens with my teams (a game is about to start, a game is tied and nearing the end etc etc).

Can I follow my favorite teams on the iPhone app and get live activity without enabling the individual games?
