Not a single person I know uses WhatsApp, unless they absolutely, positively have to. (Not to say anything negative about it; just that it’s not universal.)
My experience as well. When we had a couple android users in the friend group we used whatever flavor of the month Google chat app (which I hated). Then thankfully they agreed to switch to Signal. Now that everyone is on iOS we still use Signal for group chats most of the time, iMessage the rest.
We were never all WhatsApp users during the same timeframe so it never took.
Here in Germany most people use WhatsApp. Personally I do not and will not use it as long as giving them access to your contacts is required. I simple do not want this and beside that it is probably a violation of the GDPR. Because of this a lot of companies I know do not allow WhatsApp on company phones.
I do use iMessage a lot within the familie and some friends, with others I use Threema.

Whole Europe uses WhatsApp and nobody uses iMessage over here, only vor 2FA SMS or other SMS, but to communicate with people, everybody uses WhatsApp or Telegram. So its exactly the oposite here, the US has about 330 milion People, Europa has about 750 milion people, so the US is not the centre of the world, like many of you believe 🙂
