With iOS 16, Apple will bring support for opt-in web notification support later in 2023, allowing users to receive notifications from websites through Safari and, presumably, other supported browsers on iOS.

Apple mentions the feature on the iOS 16 features page, saying it will be coming to iOS in 2023. Safari on iOS 16 is also gaining other new features, including Shared Tab Groups, new web extension APIs, and more.

iOS 16 will be available to developer beta testers later today and public beta testers in July. iOS 16 is a significant release with major customization features and major improvements to stock apps.

This is one of those things that the majority of people aren’t going to use, but there are a select few who are welcome them. Appreciate when apple thinks of small but useful additions

The fact that Safari still has no Profiles is mindblowing like how do you guys use Safari for work? I need to keep private strictly separated from work including book marks and search history. Still not possible with Safari as far as I know.

Glad this is opt in. Hopefully Apple provides a way to block website nag messages asking you to enable push notifications.
They've made fsckall attempt to block these notifications generically on iOS (and aggressively contribute to them in some Apple apps).
So...

Chrome and Firefox have supported Web Push Notifications since 2015/2016. The fact that Safari didn’t was always an impediment to certain web application use cases. At least Firefox disables Web Push Notifications by default. I would expect Safari to do the same.

Hope it’s more secure than on chrome, there have been a number of exploits allowing sites to setup push notifications without user interaction. Then the user is bombarded with notifications regarding virus infections etc

This is one of those things that are objectively good but subjectively I couldn’t care less for
I never allow notifications from websites on desktop and I’m not about to start doing it on my phone either 🤷‍♂️

Easy, I have a different user account on my Mac for work. It helps me keep everything private and work related separate.

Support for notifications is probably mostly intended to improve web app functionality and to use in coming legal cases involving the App Store.

I’m personally more interested in new web extension APIs. I really hope Apple improves its Safari extensions game.

I once built an entire app for a website because this wasn’t possible.
