Apple today announced that the Messages app on iOS 16 has been significantly enhanced with several new features.

Most notably, iOS 16 introduces the ability to edit or unsend recently sent iMessages, as well as mark iMessage conversations as unread after opening them. These features will bring iMessage more in line with third-party messaging services like WhatsApp and Telegram.

To edit or unsend a message, users simply need to tap and hold on a bubble and select the option. Apple says users can edit or unsend a message for up to 15 minutes after sending it, or recover recently deleted messages for up to 30 days after deletion.

Apple also announced that SharePlay is coming directly to the Messages app. This functionality will allow SharePlay to be initiated in the Messages app, allowing you to watch a TV show or movie while you are messaging a friend, for example.

iOS 16 will be publicly released in the fall. The first beta was seeded to developers today, and a public beta will follow in July.

So if someone sends an offensive or threatening message to another person can the sender completely erase it or is there some remaining record that the person who received it can show to law enforcement?

This feature has been availabe on other platforms for *years* now. Never understood the hype around iMessage. Limited set of message reactions, formerly no edit or unsend etc. It's just one in the line of Apple services that are bang average and features already availabe on other platfors get added to them bit by bit for marketing buzz.

I'm a happy camper, is this a big update, no. But the ability to edit and unsend messages is what I wanted for years, I don't know what took Apple so long to do this.

Utterly useless when half the US uses Android and close to 90% of the rest of the world use Android. It could be resolved so easily if they would release imessage for android.... I guess apple knows thier products suck and knows people would switch away to android.

Some of my 'friends' have constantly sent me messages and deleted them on WhatsApp. I've blocked all of them. Some people constantly send you messages and then delete them. It's annoying.

This is excellent news. I always enjoying reading about a new feature I can actually make use of. Thanks, Apple.

I wonder what the time limit will be to allow one to edit or delete a message once it has been sent.

I really hope the update jumps you to the first unread message in the thread, instead of starting at the bottom like now, where you have to scroll back up. It’s crazy annoying.

I don't get all the fretting (mostly elsewhere) about editing functionality. This has only been available for YEARS without huge craziness on Facebook, Reddit, Line, Telegram, Signal, Line...
