Curious - what phone do you have now?

Edit: Just say in a post you have the 13 pro? Assume it's not the 13 PM. Pretty sure before 16 I had issues with typing Ill not being corrected to I'll. I've noticed some of what you typed as well. Being in IT too, I recognize the flaw but consider it low enough of a priority to just move on.

It is the 13 Pro non Max. Like I say, I’ve always noticed autocorrect being bad but just turned it off. However I was still using autocomplete, just manually selecting it. That’s what has gone so haywire in 16. I have to manually type just about everything now because autocomplete only suggests wacky things. I type enough on my phone that it’s a big problem for me.

And that’s the weird thing. On 15 and prior I never noticed this being a big deal, especially the contractions. It’s like on 16 it had every English contraction removed from its autocomplete dictionary. I’ve never seen it in release notes, but someone on these forums said autocorrect was improved. So I don’t know if they actually changed anything or not, but it’s worse for me to the point that I have now gone in and added lots of new stuff to the text replacement custom dictionary that I never had to before.

I notice no one mentioned what is possibly the most annoying issue for me since it’s a feature I was using all the time. Nobody uses Siri app suggestions? Often I won’t even swipe to home screen on my phone, I just swipe down right from (face id unlocked) lock screen straight into spotlight, and about 75% of the time Siri has correctly guessed the app I was looking for in the row of suggestions at the top. I even toggled it to suggest two rows instead of just the one, because that way it almost always guesses what I want.

That doesn’t work reliably in 16 anymore for me. Curious if anyone else has this problem or even uses that feature.

From this thread I’m getting the impression that most people don’t actually use the features that are buggy for me, or don’t have the same issues. I really appreciate all the feedback, keep it coming.

I use two Siri suggestion widgets below a calendar widget as my Home Screen and it does a pretty good job of keeping the stuff I need handy and even suggests applicable apps based on my location.

The suggestions in spotlight also seem to be okay on my end.

Maybe I could use a factory reset. I suppose other than potentially wasted time there’s not much harm in making a full backup and giving it a shot.

Edit: don’t know why I didn’t think of this sooner but I just went in and toggled suggestions in Spotlight off and on again and so far it’s reliable.

Edit again: nope still doing it. It was inconsistent before and it still is.

Not sure what any of us can do about autocorrect, that seems to be the one thing everyone agrees is broken and isn’t really a 16 issue. I’ll just keep filling out my text replacement dictionary.

Now the touch inputs, that might just be my phone. Anyone else notice that sometimes it seems to interpret a side swipe as an up/down swipe too much?

Now that this thread has forced me to really closely look at what I’m complaining about, it might not be quite so bad as I thought.

So far so good on 16.1. Maybe there were a ton of fixes but Apple refuses to acknowledge there were ever bugs in the first place.

OK rant time. Starting my own post so no one else has to read this but I can't be alone here.

I even posted on this forum saying I should stay on 15 until at least 16.2 or .3. God I wish I had listened to my own advice.

WatchOS9 is actually ok, but 16 makes me feel like I'm back on my Pixel 2. This is damn ridiculous.

The lock screen has added so much lag. Touch inputs fail to register. Most of the time my first attempt to swipe left is interpreted as an up or down swipe.

Siri suggestions for apps in Spotlight is broken, and I used that all the time.

Autocorrect is the worst it has ever been. I don't know what the hell happened but every single suggestion is absolutely stupid. I turned automatic correction off already as it was never great, and went back to retroactively break sentences that I had typed correctly.

But now the damn thing won't suggest any contractions. Or when it does, it ONLY suggests the contraction to a word like "yesterday." If I type "yester" the only autocomplete suggestion is "yesterday's" and not "yesterday." However if I type "il" it only wants to suggest "illegal" and never ever "I'll" no matter how many times I type it. So yes, I have gone into text replacement and added every single English contraction, and also words like "yesterday" since it doesn't seem to comprehend.

Oh and I would use Gboard but that's all but abandoned, and third party keyboard support has never worked properly.

And now it looks like 16.1 is focusing solely on trying to shove the rest of the crap out the door that Apple has been working on instead of fixing bugs.

This won't be sorted out until Christmas at this rate, if even. And then another WWDC will roll around and they will announce a dozen more half baked features that won't ship until January 2024.

I'm starting to get on board the "Tim Cook needs to go" bandwagon. If this year is any indication of the future, it looks like I'm headed back to Android. If it's going to be buggy and half baked then I'll at least get a good keyboard, a MUCH better phone application, and all the freedom I am denied on iOS.

I've been on iPhone since the 3GS by the way. I switched to Android around iPhone 6 time frame because Apple was falling behind. Then Google started screwing up even harder and Apple got their **** together again for a while.

Now there's simply no good option.
None of these are common problems. iOS16 is not perfect (nor is 16.1)... but it's far from this bad. The lockscreens and Siri Suggestions work great on my 12 Pro, and... well, autocorrect has always been crap. I have never used suggestions on any platform.

Sounds like you've convinced yourself the problems are inherent with iOS and not anything with your install, and you're looking for an excuse to jump platforms. I say, go ahead. Both are great today. Good luck,

Siri Suggestions is working exactly as expected for me. It did get a little wonky as I progressed through the 16.0 beta process, but it's great now. Perhaps today's 16.1 update will fix some of your issues?

Yeah I'll admit I jumped the gun a bit. The fact there were no bug fixes mentioned irked me, but I should have known better. It's a bit better on 16.1 so far.

Basically this thread just turned into an autocorrect is terrible thread.
