With iOS 16, Apple is giving users the option to use a third-party authentication app with the built-in Passwords feature in the Settings app.

This allows those who prefer authentication apps like Google Authenticator or Authy to set that as the default, getting codes from those apps when using the two-factor authentication option with Passwords.

The third-party authenticator app options are available as an alternative to the built-in iCloud Passwords & Keychain feature and can be used as the default when setting up verification codes.

So now I can use chrome and safari with the apple keychain as my password manager ?

I have been using Dashlane as password manager on iOS since 2019, fully integrated since 2020.

It would be nice if iOS could just sync all of them in the background. That way you can use any combination but not worry about selecting one.
Sync can be tricky, especially if it results in the inability to access your accounts. I have some accounts in both Settings and 1Password (I used to use 1Password more, but lately I’ve used Settings more), and the 1Password info is likely stale. But there doesn’t seem to be any “last updated” info on either, least of all info that would be useful for syncing without causing data loss.

I don't get this. If Keychain can sync across devices why Apple can make an API that lets other players can use to ensure compatibility?

Where can you enable this on safari on Mac OS Monterey ?
You typically go to the relevant website's security section. If the site in question (e.g. Amazon, eBay, Twitter etc) has the option to make use of 2-factor authentication via an authenticator app, choose that option. Note that, historically, a dedicated app would be required to act as the authenticator, but Safari can now do this directly, so no separate app required.

Example shown here.

Think I explained it a bit complicated. When you are on mobile chrome or mobile safari and need to fill in your username and password you can select both chrome passwords and safari keychain passwords. Where can you enable this feature on a MacOS ?

Right. That has nothing to do with 2-factor authentication.

It would be Chrome's responsibility on macOS to offer up the various places you might have passwords installed. I don't use Chrome myself, so I can't say what its typical behaviour would look like.

The Minimalist dev wanted this for a long time now, I’m very happy TOTP auto fill is now available for 3rd parties. I hated that pop up “Copied to your clipboard” that is seen on all password managers, because they all linger in the notification centre and it’s useless after the code is pasted.
