I think in order to get some idea about the local backup question, how are shared albums currently treated when you select download originals to Mac in photos? Does the shared album get downloaded in full as well?

I'm so confused by this feature. How is it different from the existing share albums? Does anyone know? I'm legit curious as to the difference.
Then it's probably not for you. People have been waiting for Apple's solution to this problem for a long time, and it was immediately clear that Apple was addressing it, and how.

how is this any different than existing shared albums?
This allows for photos to automatically go to a shared library. Shared albums require manually selecting photos for inclusion. There are also many other differences. This solves one of my biggest issues with Photos on iPhones.

I'm quite interested in this one but I'd like to know whether the full resolution image with any Live Photo component will be used or if it's downgraded to a .jpg

I'd really just like to have a way to have ONE library with family members...not have three libraries (hers AND mine AND a shared one).

I’m sure that nothing could ever go wrong when photos of mommy and daddy in their separate connected suite while on vacation end up in the family share.

The big problem with the existing shared folders is that they don't share the original full quality images - just a lower resolution and more compressed version.

Hopefully the new implementation will share the originals. At present the only way to share the originals automatically is to use the same iCloud username.

One question I have is how will the photos be “migrated” when the child grows up and starts a new family.

When that child leaves the “family group” and starts a new “family group”, would he/she be able to copy a set to his own photo library?

An iCloud Shared Photo Library can be shared with up to five other people, and each contributor has equal access to add, edit, favorite, caption, and delete shared photos.

This is exactly what I want (assuming RAW is supported) except that I really do not want anyone else deleting a photo I have taken. I wonder if this can be handled in a smart way, i.e. deleted images revert to only your own library? Also, what happens if two people want different edits of a photo?

Just duplicate the photo, revert, and apply new edits

Sure, but this assumes that someone else has not reverted or changed previous edits. Currently once the editor window has been closed it is not possible to undo edit steps, the only option is to revert to original.

This isn't a huge issue, and having this functionality is definitely worth some potential frustration. (As long as deleted photos are always available to the one who took them, and the option to revert to original is always available.)

Right! :D Combining two families is a quick way to up your numbers too. Then suddenly you find a working iCloud Family solution become annoyingly difficult to figure out how you want to use it... some kids share Apple IDs, have two iCloud Family circles and plans, keep half the family on Android/Google, etc., when all I really want is the option to pay Apple more money so I can add another user to our circle.

We have been waiting for this for so long! My wife and I want to have a single shared library so we can both see the kids sports photos or vacation pics or whatever. Once upon a time we would connect our camera to the iMac and download to iPhoto to manage, and then we could get the most current library whenever we would plug in and sync. Once Apple stopped relying on the desktop to manage everything, they never solved for this. Google did come up with a great solution...but we are all Apple house, so not worth the time and effort to integrate. Now that things are all iCloud, my wife has been complaining for years about being a 2nd class citizen because she can't see all the photos we both took years ago and are connected to my iCloud account. Shared albums never worked because it was manual for every photo and you had to search that album and the quality was crap. Nobody wants to go through their photos every week and select what they want to share, this should be automatic. The logic they are building in like photos since a certain time or of certain people will be great for some people, but for us, the share all with the ability to exclude a few items like photos of gifts or work related sounds wonderful. Seriously, if this has been a problem for you, you know how painful it has been and how great this feature will be. Thank you, thank you, thank you!

So does it send the original or a copy of the orig that people in the shared family album can mess around with and even delete?

This is what I’m wondering. Sound like there’s some automation going on which could be helpful but also not game-changing.

In terms of collaborative, shared albums apple needs to take notes from google photos. It’s not a great experience sharing to or adding photos from a non apple or iCloud account.

This is full first-class ownership of the photos, including the full resolution (which you do not get in shared albums) and editing, deletion, faving and so on. It is definitely game-changing, and you can find lots of frustration and many feature requests for this dating back to the introduction of Photos.

Where did you find the editing options?
