I tried updating iPhone to iOS 16 using iTunes but it's giving an error. Now it's asking to restore and I don't think it backed up before this and the iPhone is stuck at the Apple logo.
Any ideas how to restore the iPhone and at least go back to iOS 15.6.1 without losing data?

Did you update iTunes first? It seems the older iTunes (from before today) is incompatible with iOS 16. If not that'll probably need to be done first.

I didn’t use iTunes, just clicked to upgraded to iOS 16 through Settings app and it never finished the installation process and it’s just black screen blinking Apple logo for like 2hrs now. Wtf Apple? Not sure what to do??

You'll probably have to use a Mac or Windows computer with iTunes to attempt to restore your device.

Now I am trying to restore the iPhone and iTunes is showing Preparing iPhone for Restore. It seems nothing is happening.

Update: iPhone updated to iOS16 without losing data.
So what was the issue? How did you manage to update to iOS 16 when your device was allegedly stuck in a loop / black screen cycle as your described earlier?

My guess is the iTunes version. With the old iTunes, iOS didn't update at all. After updating the iTunes, it downloaded the .ipsw, started the update and then the iPhone got stuck on the black screen with iTunes showing a message to factory restore the iPhone and all the data will be erased. After restarting the iPhone and going ahead with Restore, it actually updated to iOS16 with all the data.
If it was because of the old iTunes version then better update path would have been informing the user to iTunes first and not allowing iOS16 .ipsw download since unknowingly one can download the .ipsw in iTunes and manually start the update process with incompatible iTunes version.

Same. Was able to connect to the Mac and force and Update that way. Thankfully didn’t have to restore it.
