Apple is adding the ability for users to lock their Hidden and Recently Deleted albums on iOS 16, requiring user authentication through Touch ID or Face ID to access.

Apple says that starting with iOS 16 this fall, both albums will be locked by default. Currently, both the Hidden and Recently Deleted albums are exposed, allowing anyone who may grab access to your phone the ability to go through your photos.

iOS 16 is a massive release with new customization features for the lock screen and changes across the board. The first beta of iOS 16 is currently available to developers for beta testing and a public beta will be available later in July.

Totally understand for hidden. Less for deleted though. Hopefully you can enable this separately.

What the heck is the point, if I still can't lock out mail and messages? It still means any iOS device better only be handled by the owner never able to be passed around. Yes I need to be able to pass my iPad all the time and no I don't want them having access to my email or messages. I guess locking out deleted photos is super important as someone in CA doesn't understand the concept of deleting.

Because ALL photos you delete end up in deleted, even hidden ones that you just don't want anymore. Doesn't mean you want them potentially out in the open for 30 days... haha

About time. Aside from the humorous reasons to secure photos, it is also handy for passwords and similar - at times when creating a new account, I screen-grab the password info so I don’t forget it. But I never feel too secure putting it in my hidden photos. Whatever the reason for keeping images private, this is a much-appreciated security option.

12/10 would prefer being able to lock the entire photos app.

if i label a nude as hidden, does it show up in recent photos when people are scrolling through?

in a world where a lot of people's photos app is mostly filled with memes and screenshots, i wish there was a better way of offloading them. i have resorted to using image capture because i don't really want them in photos macOS, but i have to go through individually and hope i'm not removing something in a meme react folder or something i favorited to keep on my phone.

The following is, always has been and always will be true. If someone values the security of their device, they should not unlock their device and give it to someone. They shouldn’t even give their locked device to someone as physical access is the first phase of all security exploits on iDevices.

Random folks can’t find out UNLESS you’re in the habit of giving random folks access to your device, though. Don’t give anyone your device and, hidden or not, your images are your own!
I was joking of course. And I agree with you. There is no point for me to need two barriers. One on the lock screen is enough. I never hand over my phone to anyone unlocked. Just a good habit to have.

And if for some urgent reason one needs to lend a phone he can always enable guided access.

AH, gotcha. I can really never tell. :) There have been folks that have posted saying they don’t want to say no to someone that wants to borrow their phone AND they want to keep photos on their phone that they don’t want others to see.

Hidden photos don’t show up in your recent photos, they also don’t show up in the photo picker when using apps.

I think it’s a nice addition to have.
