Millionaire software designers? You mean all zero of them?
This is from levels.fyi for software engineers at Apple:

Surely there must be some millionaires among those.

I love fixes like this. It seems so small, but you know there's a designer that's been ranting and raving about it incessantly the past year and every release sends them into a new fit of pique that the software team didn't prioritize it out of the backlog yet, until fixing it becomes that designer's one reason for being.

I don’t remember it. I though Apple used wallpapers with dark or black color degraded towards the top of the screen with its notched iPhone, going as far back as the iPhone XS.

And the iOS screens with sort of like a tab shape at the top to leave all the space up there black. But I guess all of that came later with iOS 12 or 13?
Yes, here’s a reference to the original guidelines: https://www.macrumors.com/2017/11/13/apple-approves-notch-remover-app-iphone-x/

the mere existence of reachability proves that phones are too big
It was introduced with the 4.7” iPhone 6, where I already had to use it all the time, which is one of the reasons why I upgraded to the SE1 when it came out the year after. And once the SE3 gets discontinued, it looks like 6.1” will be the smallest size, with the Pro already at 6.3”.

There is a slightly safer way, but it’s more difficult to do one-handed (it works better with the index finger than with the thumb), kinda defeating the purpose: https://www.idownloadblog.com/2017/11/27/how-to-reachability-iphone-x-secret-gesture/
Thanks for posting this… yeah I tried it and it still is very finnicky and hard to do. Just holding down on the home bar at the bottom for a short while would be an awesome option, as that gesture is not used at the moment. Oh well.
