Apple is expected to release iOS 17.1 this week, and amongst other features the update includes a new Lock Screen personalization option for iPhones. Here's how to make your Lock Screen wallpaper shuffle through photos from a specific album in your photo library.

In recent versions of iOS, Apple has made it possible for users to customize the Lock Screen in ways that were simply not possible in earlier versions of its mobile software, and one feature in particular that has proven popular is the ability to shuffle photos on your Lock Screen wallpaper at specific intervals or whenever you wake or tap the screen.

In iOS 17.1, Apple has extended this feature so that you can now shuffle pictures from a specific album from your photo library, rather than having to manually select individual photos or rely on Apple's preset options of People, Pets, Nature, and Cities. The following steps show you how it's done on iPhones running iOS 17.1.
  1. Wake your iPhone and use Face ID to unlock it, but don't swipe up on the Lock Screen.
  2. Press and hold on the Lock Screen until the wallpaper gallery appears, then tap the blue + button in the bottom-right corner of the screen.
  3. Select Photo Shuffle from the wallpaper menu.

Tap the new Album option, then choose the album of photos from your library that you'd like to shuffle between.
  4. Next, choose a Shuffle Frequency: Daily, Hourly, On Lock, or On Tap.
Tap Use Album to move on.

Tap the screen to preview the photos in your chosen album as they will appear on your Lock Screen, and tap the clock to adjust the font style and color so that the time, date, and any widgets remain legible against all of your pictures.
Tap Done in the top-right corner to finish, then choose either Set as Wallpaper Pair to finish or Customize Home Screen to tweak its look separately, then tap Done.

Tap your new album-specific photo shuffle wallpaper in the gallery to make it live. Then you can tap or wake your iPhone's screen to change the photo, or wait for it to change automatically, depending on your chosen option.

Why does Apple not make shared albums available for stuff like this? Photo Shuffle on the lock screen would be perfect for our trip to Hawaii, Italy, etc. where we created a shared album and everyone on the trip added pictures.

I'm too lazy to create photo albums manually. Easier to search on the pictures on location, etc.

Side note, does anyone know if it's possible to find out where the picture was taken / access the lock screen photo in your library for me details?

(So many times have I seen a photo from my library that I think, thats nice where was it taken / when was this).

Yes, is possible, if I understood your need correctly: Long press on that wallpaper you are interested, select “customize”, then select the “3 dots button” on right lower corner, select “show in the photo library”.

Actually I didn’t realized until now that I set the wallpaper to change “when I press the screen”. That blew my mind!!!!! I will show it off to all my friends!!!

I'm having an issue when you are on silent mode vibration doesn't work on my 15 pro max I have mine set to just badge alerts on my 15PM tho my 14PM worked just fine on iOS 16.7 lol I have done everything setup as new iPhone and changed and played with every setting you can think of..... It will only work if one of the notification banners are on but on iOS 16 i didn't have to have those turned on.

I love little personalization like this!

A lot better than the random photo memory that Apple alerts me on. Now I have a reason to enjoy my photos more.

It's not really a shuffle, as I think a shuffle should mean random photo is chosen, rather it seems to cycle through the photos in the album in the same order.

Does anyone know if there is a way to do this for the photos widget instead of it just showing the same 5 photos all the time?

I do not remember nor use the features that was released when ios 17 came out let alone play with lock screen, wallpapers etc. I am waiting for AI features and an updated siri to take advantage of.

Is that a picture of a baby using filters to add makeup, eyelashes, and cheekbones? WTF?
