Apple on Tuesday released iOS 17.2.1 for the iPhone, and the update supposedly improves battery life in at least some countries.

iOS-17.2.1-Feature.jpg

In the U.S. and most other countries, the iOS 17.2.1 release notes only mention "important bug fixes," and do not provide any specific details. In China and Japan, however, the notes also indicate that the update "addresses an issue that can cause the battery to drain faster under certain conditions," based on a computer translation of the text.

The release notes discrepancy was highlighted in a social media post on X by Brandon Butch, who runs an iOS-focused YouTube channel. We have reached out to Apple for clarification, and we'll update this story if we receive a response.

Following the release of iOS 17.2.1, Apple continues to beta test a larger iOS 17.3 update, which will likely be released in January or February. iOS 17.3 adds a new "Stolen Device Protection" security option, and reintroduces collaborative Apple Music playlists, a feature that was originally intended to launch with iOS 17.2 last week.

that is interesting. I understand that iOS comes in many different languages, from a UI perspective, but battery drain issues in certain countries? are some features only available in certain countries?

Could be a complex interplay with different cellular bands or something along those lines

Or it just never picked up media steam in the west which is when Apple publically says things are fixed

Well whatever the bugs are that ios 17.2.1 says it fixed I can tell you the one bug that isnt fixed is in icloud backup where it says next backup size. Under next backup size it doesn't show, it just says LOADING Ive spoken to many other ppl and they said they have the same issue with this on their macs in ios 17.2 but I dont have a mac I have iphone se 3rd generation

I have a feeling this was in the English release notes too and they took it out, but release note translations were overlooked.
If that were the case, that would be really odd, seeing that Japan and China are major Apple markets, and they would have large teams working on the Japanese and Chinese localization.

I could see that happening if it were a last minute change. Just takes a lack of communication between teams during a short period of time.

It's my Watch on 10.2 that's back to full on drain city

Sigh. Apple software QA is never improving is it.

Mine is also on 10.2 and the drain is about the same as before the update - around 25% per day for normal use.

I have no issues with Apple's QA.

iPhone 15 pro max with 17.2. I have battery brain whenever the camera app is used. phone gets hot. everything else is fine. I hope this update will help.

It's interesting that I experienced a massive battery drain on my iPhone 14 Pro a few days ago with iOS 17.2. The phone was lying face-down with screen off and the battery dropped from about 90% charge to about 2% in about 90 minutes. The battery usage display said that the Kindle app was using the most power.

My Ultra 2 has been having great battery life with the update. I've been getting 48 hours or more :).

At the time of writing: "iOS 17.2.1 This update has no published CVE entries."
https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201222
But CISA says: "Apple has released security updates to address vulnerabilities in Safari, iOS, iPadOS, and macOS Sonoma. A cyber threat actor could exploit one of these vulnerabilities to obtain sensitive information."
https://www.cisa.gov/news-events/alerts/2023/12/20/apple-releases-security-updates-multiple-products
The CISA alert may be referring to 17.2. After all, iPadOS 17.2.1 did not happen yesterday. And any Safari-based vulnerability that affects iOS and macOS would presumably also affect iPadOS.

Battery drain was horrible with iOS 17.1 when using HomePods at home.
It got better with iOS 17.2
Hoping for the fix now.
