In iOS 17.2, Apple lets you customize the alert tone used by your iPhone for default notifications. This is good news for anyone who does not like the "Rebound" tone that Apple introduced in iOS 17.

In previous versions of iOS, Apple allowed users to choose a ring tone and a text tone, as well as custom alert sounds for email, calendar, and reminder alerts. Anything else that threw up notifications used a default sound, and there was no way to change it.

With iOS 17, Apple then changed the original default alert sound, from "Tri-tone" to "Rebound." Many users disliked the change, with some arguing that the new sound is harder to hear. So the new ability in iOS 17.2 to change the default sound to whatever you like should come as welcome news.

To change the tone - as well as the haptic vibration – of notifications from apps that use the default sound, follow these steps.
  1. Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
  2. Tap Sounds & Haptics.
  3. Select Default Alerts.
  4. Choose a sound for the alert tone. You can use one from Apple's built-in options, buy a tone from the Tone Store, or opt for no sound (None) instead.
  5. To change the accompanying haptic vibration, tap through to Haptics. There you can choose a vibration from the pre-set options, make your own via Create New Vibration, or opt for None.

After completing the steps above, any notification sound that uses the default alert tone will use the sound you selected. If you're not happy with your changes, you can use the same steps to revert to the original "Rebound" default alert.

Will this work for WhatsApp as well? I hate it that you still can't pick a newer ringtone and you're stuck with the old ugly ones.

So does this mean this will change the sound for third party apps like Discord?

I wonder if I can import a custom sound for this? I normally keep my phone on silent, but I'm willing to change that if I can set my default sound to Rick Astley's most (in)famous song. :p

I saw on YouTUbe the 17.2 Beta , the updated Default Tones the volume was very very low ..That was Beta, Can someone confirm the volume on 17.2 non beta are normal volume ?

Now if Apple would only allow other apps to choose from any added alerts & tones! Setting a system default from your own added sounds is a great start, though. But if you use a 3rd party app, you don't have the ability to select from those sounds.

The best change to come with 17.2. I'd complained about it in the beta feedback, since 17 went into beta.

When I look into Default Alerts and scroll down to the bottom, any of my previously imported "ringtones" are there for selection so I'm guessing you can import RA and Never Give It Up to your heart's desire.

Indeed you can, although I’m not sure how advisable it is to make your default notification sound something that’s three minutes and 33 seconds long.

I changed this, but my Apple Watch still has the old “ding” sound. Does anyone know wether this applies to the Apple Watch as well? I thought that everything was mirrored?

Ugh - No fix for using Siri to set an alarm with a default tone. I have a 15 Pro Max. When I use Siri to set an alarm. It defaults to NONE. Why set an alarm then? If I manually set an alarm, then set another, the new alarm defaults to the last tone I used for the prior alarm. But when using Siri, I get “NONE”. Seriously, if you can add a default tone to everything else, why not one for alarms? Seems so simple. Get it together, Apple. Search the web, it’s a problem.

That's nice, now can I get this for macOS? You can change the 'Alert' sound, but the Notification Center sound progressively got harder to change since macOS Sierra, until you finally just can't change it. Each update they actually made it more difficult to modify that sound, as if it were a feature goal to not be able to change it.
