Predictive typing is a terrible idea and really needs to go away. Using it requires the conscious mind to continually evaluate the suggestions. This requires more effortful thinking than maintaining an intended word in your mind while you type it out.

What eventually would be nice is leveraging large language models for auto-correct since they are quite good at contextual corrections.

I wish the blue text "corrections" line under words could be turned off. I know it shows up for only a second, but it's distracting and annoying. I don't need to know when I've misspelled a word and it's been corrected for me. I've had to switch to swiftkey just to remove this "feature".

Why don’t I see “show predictions inline” as shown in this article? I only see “predictive text”.

I’m on 17.2
Check down lower on the page. Mine was under the section called "English" because I also had a Spanish keyboard installed. After I deleted the Spanish keyboard the setting moved up to under the "Predictive Text" setting like is shown in the OP.

You have ‘Predictive Text’ turned off. Once you turn in on ‘Show Predictive Inline’ will appear.
This is so helpful, thank you for the info.

But also, when you turn predictive text on or off, there’s not one smooth animation for the inline predictions toggle appearing or disappearing.

“Predictive” text and “autocorrect” have gotten even worse despite all the hype. Autocorrect is barely even worth having turned on anymore.

I guess that’s to be expected with Apple these days.

I am genuinely surprised you are having this experience. I absolutely despised autocorrect, for years. You can check my post history, I was a vocal critic. I had it completely turned off for all of iOS 16 because it was just embarrassingly horrible.

It is night and day better now. Just typing this post not trying at all it has fixed a ton of mangled words. It used to actively fight me and mangle correct sentences.

I wouldn’t normally suggest this but maybe try a full dictionary reset.

Yeah, it was super distracting to me. You can turn it off on the Mac, too.

System Settings -> Keyboard -> Input Sources -> Edit -> All Input Sources -> Show inline predictive text

I don't know how anyone can stand it. It's like a bunch of flies buzzing around my cursor while I'm trying to write.

I can completely understand why someone would want to turn it off, and I am very glad they made it optional.

Having said that, I find it useful and extremely conservative. It very rarely guesses incorrectly and I find it so unobtrusive I usually just finish typing it myself anyway and don’t realize in time that I could have just hit space.

Yeah I’ve done the full reset many times. And still I have to fight with it exactly as you described.

I find all these auto correct features completely useless. I type so fast that by the time I would have taken a pause to either tap on one of the suggestions or let iOS do its suggestion on its own, I am already done typing and yes, I can even type without looking at the keyboard. I am this good!

Sometimes I attempt to use the auto correct but then it does something stupid like this „I walking“ turns into „I walked ing“

I don’t mind the words appearing inline, but I do find it annoying that if I realise I’ve made a typo, start to backspace and re-do my word, it will get stuck and freeze on the suggested word. It’s so buggy. Definitely have to turn that off.

in general the autocorrect is much worse than iOS 16. It used to be good. Now it just does complicated words and kind of leaves most of the small errors. I guess that appeals to people who can’t spell, and isn’t really so useful anymore for people who are good with English but have clumsy fingers.

I do quit q bit of writing on my iPad and on my iPhone using Pages, I have noticed that the predictive text has become much more accurate over the last few updates. I also find the in line predictive text to be more usable than the suggestions just appearing at the top of the keyboard.

I like it, especially when using my external keyboard on the iPad where it’s handy to hit the space bar, but I’m only mostly seeing inline predictions in the Messages app.

edit: I wish it were available when typing in the MR forum.

I use Tapatalk and inline predictive text works with it.

If you don’t like it, turn it off. But to say it shouldn’t exist would take it away from those of us who like it and use it.
