I think there is a slight difference between "nudity" and "unsolicited sexually explicit content".

I hope I won't get banned for life, but I have to admit I was born nude. Unnatural, I know. Freaky.

I really would like to protect my child from all sorts of evil things happening in the big, bad Internet. Violence, verbal bullying and harassment are commonplace. Nudity (unless it falls into the category of unsolicited sexually explicit) does not make it to my list of fears. And I am less worried about them seeing some business-as-usual adult content than videos of people being decapitated or shot.

(Yes, I know. The attitudes towards nudity are a bit different in some European countries vs. the US. But believe or not, naked body ≠ sex.)

Agreed. The world has reached a point of "fear" over so many things, that it's downright unhealthy. I fear for the human race if we keep on this trajectory. We live in a snowflake world...

So it’s scanning and “learning” from my personal photos local on my device? I’d suspect it’s reporting back to the “mothership” too?

Geee this never could be used in a very bad and very creepy way, never I tell you 😂

I thought google was the creepy one

Also if I have nudes on my phone it’s not like I’m going to hand it to ANYONE sure as heck not “the children” or a frickin or sensitive type
It doesn't report back to Apple.

It uses software to detect objects and shapes. It has been done for a decade and now we have enough computing power to recognize objects on mobile devices.

People who don’t want to see nudity in texts or in contact pictures, people who don’t want their kids to receive sexts. All of this image processing is done locally using the Neural Engine on your phone, and it’s opt-in. It makes far more sense as a feature than do the people who claim it doesn’t make sense.
I'm all for this.

But for balance, I'm also all for an option to access an uncensored app store.

I'd actually like an option to access a completely uncensored damn well everything in the world. Having other people's moral standards imposed on me is pretty damn insulting.

These comments are weird, like they didn't even skim the two sentence article.

Let me rephrase it:

iPhone iOS can optionally blur dick pics that are sent to your phones messages.

People bypassed the blurring filter by putting dick pics as their contact photo or in message stickers.

iOS 7.2 is updated to block more dick pics where people were sneaking them in.

Any questions?

Now this is more like it. Allow users to decide if they want it or not (and parents to make that decision for their children) and don’t self report flagged content to the government or any other third party entity.

Hopefully Apple will include an option to turn off incoming call posters entirely. Who at Apple thought it was a good idea from a security standpoint to fill your screen with the name of the caller and a random picture?

and who the hell actually adds photos to their contacts? lol.

maybe it's just me but i've never done that. so all that comes up is their name and initials. it's an absolute waste of space and useless.

If you’re worried about that with you kids, they are too young to have a phone in the first place

Also when I was a “young impressionable child” if a grown adult would have sent me a “inappropriate picture” 99.9% chance me and my fiends would have laughed at it and made fun of them to the point they needed a shrink 😂

Folks are waaaaayyyyyy too soft these days

Well, you’d suspect wrong. It’s on device and doesn’t phone home, so your entire post is based on a false assertion.

Trusting a publicly traded company who zaps their products batteries to sell more, yeah they’d never do anything naughty

Apples better than others, but you’d still be silly to trust them more than gas station sushi

That may be true. Wouldn't we all find ot more relaxing to take Apple's word for... well, anything?

However Apple brands or explains such features, and despite Apple's claims not to collect, share or expose any findings, we will never know until it's too late.

It's more in line with the human condition to accept that If they can, they will. It's inevitable. Though perhaps not for their immediate corporate benefit.

There is no length to which a nation-states will not go to make such surveillance tools available. Who knows what they'll "Screen" for next? Pictures of fertilizer, diesel and starter fluid? That's every farm I ever supported. Pictures of small gas engines? Cars with LS swaps? Smoking? Books on your shelves about Madisonian Democracy? It won't be illegal, because government will make it legal.

This is not an accusation, per se, because that implies proof (of which there will be none). This is merely a thought exercise. Everyone must assess the extent to which they trust the Gizmo Industrial Complex.

Personally, I can't spare the energy to behave all OCD about it. I likes me some Apple gizmos, and I'm itching to get an iPhone 15 Pro and a new MacBook M3 Pro. Soon as I can spare the cash. I like youtube videos picking them apart and arguing over it all. Plus I work in cybersecurity, and business is good.
