As I expected, which was only logical, the new emojis introduced with iOS 17.4 are incompatible with the latest version of watchOS (10.3.1).
Is this the first time Apple updates iOS and neglects to update watchOS at the same time? If memory serves, Apple has always released an update to watchOS whenever it releases an update to iOS.
In my opinion, it is nothing short of negligence on Apple's part to release an update to iOS which includes new emojis, and not release a corresponding update to watchOS so that these new emoji can be rendered on Apple Watch.
More serious than the lack of support for the new emojis on the current version of watchOS: I'm assuming the two "major security vulnerabilities" that were fixed by iOS 17.4 may exist on watchOS as well (since watchOS is based on iOS). If this is the case, then watchOS will remain vulnerable until it is updated.
I'm including screenshots of the lime emoji on iOS 17.4, and what actually shows up instead of the new lime emoji on watchOS 10.3.1.
