The first developer beta of iOS 17 includes code-level references to a new MagSafe Battery Pack with model number A2781, and a new MagSafe Charger with model number A3088, according to tech enthusiast @aaronp613.

No further details are known about the accessories at this time. Last year, Apple supply chain analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said that the MagSafe Battery Pack would be updated with a USB-C port for charging in the foreseeable future, alongside the iPhone 15 series moving to USB-C. The current MagSafe Battery Pack has a Lightning port.

As for the MagSafe Charger, one potential improvement could be Qi2 support, which could allow for up to 15W charging of non-Apple devices instead of the current 7.5W limit. The first Qi2-certified chargers are expected to launch later this year. It's unclear if the MagSafe Duo Charger with an Apple Watch charging puck would also be updated.

Apple released the MagSafe Battery Pack in 2021, while the MagSafe Charger has been available since 2020. The accessories have not been updated since then, but they have received several firmware updates with optimizations over the years. Last month, it was discovered that Apple prototyped the MagSafe Charger in several different colors, but it's unclear if the additional colors would ever be made available to the public.

Something needs to change on magsafe dual charger. The size is out of whack, especially on watch charger.

Hopefully higher wattage for faster charging??

Then again, that introduces even more heat - part of the reason why I don't use wireless charging....
I will say that between my work phone and my personal phone that were bought at the same time (2020), both are at the same battery health % and one was drained to 0% every day and recharged with wireless charging pad and the other was hardly ever below 10% battery and recharged via cable every time. The battery health indicator seems to go off of only age from my "experiment" in my case unless the voltage protection is actually doing a pretty good job.

Being able to charge the MagSafe battery pack wirelessly would likely make me purchase another. Seems like an obvious omission.

Would love an updated magsafe duo with fast charging for Apple watch.... I only take off my watch while showering and getting dressed and just pop it on the charger for 45min to an hour a day.... Everything else about the charger is awesome.. I love the small footprint, the folding for travelling and the simplicity.

I bought one of these last year, and the camera bump on my iPhone 14 Pro doesn't allow it to rest completely flat on the MagSafe pad. It's even worse with a case. Disappointed to say the least. Even if Apple switches this product to USB-C, there needs to be a change to the surrounding casing so that all iPhones can lay flat, and gets a better charging experience.

Been hoping lighting would die for so many years now, hoping 2023 is finally the year can banish all lighting cables. The iPhone Pro seems all but certain, with the Battery Pack and presumably updated Magic Mouse and Keyboard, the only accessory that continues to be crickets is an updated PowerBeats Pro. I've tried every single in ear released by Apple and Beats over the years, alas with my ear shape it seems all fall out other than the PowerBeats Pro. The Beats Fit when first got them were by far the best, but after a week or so they started following out all the time as well, presumably because the material isn't rigid enough. So stuck using the PowerBeats Pro. Been hoping will get a full update, to the case since it notoriously has bad at charging, since you can put in and hours later discover when it closed it slightly lost contact and didn't charge, and would love ANC and Adaptive Audio. But at minimum please give us an updated USB-C case which with the EU, would seem very likely.

We should see faster than 15W since Qi2.1 will support that soon.

Q: The charging speed of Qi2 is still 15W. Can we expect that to increase once more brands adopt the standard and you have time to put a little more research into increasing speed while still maintaining safety?

A:
Yes. We can expect what’s called fast charging in about 18 months or so. It will be called Qi2.1, and along with it, we’ll see improvements necessary to ensure high-power charging is safe. At that time, our new standard will also be able to approach other devices out there.

I still bought too many new products with Lightning this year. Transition could have been a little quicker IMO.

Lightning will be around for a long while, with the caveat that you're not in Europe. Apple isn't going to re-do their previous year products to include USB-C. They just won't sell them in Europe. iPhone SE and iPhone 14 will likely still be sold in other countries as usual.

The MagSafe charger needs a longer cable. 1M is unusable. Native Union and Nomad understand this.
Strictly speaking it doesn’t need a cable at all, since you can charge it via the iPhone. But I don’t think Apple would be courageous enough to release a portless battery pack. :)

Edit: Oh, I think you meant he charging puck. Yeah I agree.
