I must have missed something, but is Check In a USA-only feature, and if so why?
I guess I figured it out (not sure): when selecting a person who is using iOS 16, you simply don’t see Check In, as it requires iOS 17.
There is no information about this on the website of Apple, but it could make sense in the meaning of “don’t show what you cannot use, so we don’t clutter the array of options” kind of idea.

Nah. Just installed iOS 17 on iPhone of wife, doesn’t show under the + sign either. So my guess goes back to USA-only?

Emoji now behave the same way as stickers, …. To put an emoji on a message, just open the emoji keyboard, select an emoji, and drag it up to the message you want to accent
Using iOS 17 Public Beta 1, I am unable to drag an emoji up off the emoji keyboard if it's one of those emoji that have multiple versions (like the thumbs-up for example). A long-press on that type of emoji brings up the multi-version selector and it's impossible to drag any one of them up off the emoji keyboard. At least that's my experience. Hope Apple is working on that functionality for the next beta.

Do custom stickers send from someone with iOS 17 show up as expected on an iOS 16 device?
I did some experiments yesterday under iOS 17 Public Beta 1 sending stickers to my wife's iPhone running the latest version of iOS 16. She received the stickers just fine. The stickers appear to land on the text bubble in the location they are placed, but the text flow underneath depends on the width of the receiving device —mine is a 13 Pro Max; my wife's is a 12 mini— so as a sticker sender, you will not know what text may lie beneath and around the sticker most of the time.

Try more of a tearing action. IIRC it’s a shorter tap than a long tap and it has the gesture as part of the action. Not a swipe up, there should be a slight delay. If you extend how long “long press” takes to be activated, you could probably do it more reliably.

Apple are incapable of making an IM that's even on par with other IM apps. It's actually ridiculous. How about just allowing any emoji for a reaction AND without burying it. For a company that sure loves pumping out useless emojis as major features you'd think they'd get it by now.

FML.

My all-time favorite.. Apple Stickers. I have stepped up my game. ✨

I may have stolen some of yours…

What I really want is the option to restrict a group chat to notifying me only once every 1, 5, or 20 minutes. No matter how many messages are sent. Having that repeated tap on my wrist when a big group chat is going crazy is one of the most annoying things my technology does.
Scheduled summary maybe? Though I think that's on a per app basis.

I'd say any messaging app that doesn't go through Meta's fingers is a WhatsApp killer.
No app managed to move my country’s whole population to it. and I don’t think any app can at this point. It will have to be an apple app that is already on everyones phones.

All pretty meaningless unless Apple finally starts to add support for RCS. The reason is simple, in my country no one uses iMessage, even if the iPhone density is rather high. People just use WhatsApp.
So without Apple finally adding RCS to iMessage I'll be forced to use rubbish WhatsApp forever... well thank you, Tim Apple, you make me continue to support the Zuck, even if I don't want to! And no, obviously I cannot get all my friends and colleagues to buy an iPhone, how silly of you to think that would be the result of denying us RCS.
The solution is iMessage needs Android and Windows clients.

No watch solves that for me.

There are some surprisingly powerful ways you can address this. A few minutes to dial down your settings can really improve your experience. A few things to consider:
  1. Tagging people in a group chat is key. These notifications are time-sensitive. It’s fairly new so not everyone uses it yet, but it helps prioritize notifications in the system. Leading to…
  2. You can send specific apps to Scheduled Summary of notifications, with the exception made to still receive those immediate time-sensitive notifications. This can also be done on the fly (instead of muting notifications for an hour or longer, you can send them to a summary).
  3. You can create as many Scheduled Summary times as you want in a day. This is specifically to combat the stress of being bombarded by texts or other notifications, especially if it’s a distraction while doing other things. If you have times in your day where a blow up might be more problematic, add more Scheduled Summaries to that part of the day to limit how many unscheduled times you’re hit with notification (promoting better phone habits too). For example: wake up at 6am (“while you were sleeping” catches notifications before alarm), 7am Summary (catches notifications that weren’t in “while you were sleeping”), 8am Summary (catches notifications before leaving for “work”), 8:30am Summary (anything not time-sensitive and shouldn’t otherwise interrupt getting started with “work”), 10am Summary (anything before first “meeting”), 10:30am Summary (anything before resuming “work”), 12pm Summary (anything before heading to lunch) etc etc. Obviously you’d adjust it to your day.
  4. Combining Focus modes with Scheduled Summaries, you can turn on a Focus called “Quiet Mode” and add a Focus Filter to the notifications and chats. This means that certain conversations that are too noisy can specifically be filtered and muted without silencing the conversation completely. This may not work during parts of your day if you’re using other focuses, though, so the Scheduled Summary is useful for the general day, and the Focus is for a “not right now” situation. Just remember to keep time-sensitive notifications in mind when editing a Focus - the Messages App can be blocked but tagged alerts and specific conversations can be allowed through.
This is not exhaustive as to how you can manage it, but it also applies to basically any app, including other messaging / social media ones. There are also solutions involving Siri Shortcuts and Automation. The Apple Watch itself has a Mute gesture (covering the watch with your hand), just remember to unmute.

Maybe Apple could see its way to restoring the deletion of a msg with one single click. With the amount of spam txts these days, this would be more useful than all the other improvements...

You mean swiping the conversation to delete? Same way email works. Or the “Report as Junk and Delete” button at the bottom of the spam message? Both of those work to clean up spam pretty quickly.

If you want improved compatibility between iOS and Android messaging I completely understand and agree. That doesn’t mean RCS is the technology that should be used to provide that. The difference is between advocating for a feature versus a technology. If Apple gave you every messaging feature you wanted but didn’t use RCS would you be disappointed?

The new + design/layout is terrible and clicking to add a photo takes upwards of double digits at times to actually work.
Came here to say this. It adds 1-2 more steps to the workflow (as #images is now buried under ‘More…’).
