I use Notes checklists for groceries, with the auto-sort option (checked items go to the bottom). It would be useful to have a category feature there as well, if only to be able to expand/collapse them within a note.
Why use a note?

Reminders app does the auto sort as well. Has for some time now.

"Siri, add milk to the grocery list" and you can have a template for your grocery items if you like.

With a note, you need to manually add everything each time

The items are usually already on the list and I just have to uncheck them. I prefer that to trying to get Siri to understand me. My grocery items are also in a different language than the system language.

Maybe I could do the same with Reminders, but mentally the grocery list is not a “reminder” for me, it’s “notes for later”, so Notes it is.

Can these lists be shared and edited in realtime by multiple users? Use case: wife and I add items to the list during the week, go to shop on weekend, split up and shop simultaneously but separately each checking items off the list and seeing updated checkoffs in real time.

Would that work with this?

I don’t know if Reminders can, but AnyList works perfectly for this. My wife and I do exactly as you describe … she might go pick out fruits as I get veggies, or she’ll get baking stuff while I hit the meat counter … works like a charm.

It would be even more amazing if it used your location to determine what grocery store your were in, then reorganize by isle. I’d pay for a feature like that.

AnyList does that. Has done so for forever.

This is exactly what I do. Over the course of the past three years, my list grew and I put in sub-categories (non-checklist) by type of food/location in store and uncheck items I need. Then in the store, I check them off as I drop them into the cart. Having ALL potential items can trigger me to pick up something I might need for a future meal, that wasn't on the list when I walked in. I will admit I'm not an impulse shopper, and can go into the store starving, and not pick up junk food, so having a list for me is to "not forget", rather than, "don't buy".

Yes they can. You can do this with iOS16, you just need to make sure to share the list. My boyfriend and I use reminders and have a shared grocery list. Both him and I add things to the list throughout the week and it syncs in real time, he's notified when I add things, and vice versa. As he clears groceries when he buys them, I get notified when he has cleared an item too. You just need to make sure the list you create is shared with whoever you want to have the capability to update.

Does any list work with Apple Watch and allow sharing with family members?

Edit: Just looked it up, it seems like an awesome app, but it links so much information to your account for advertising, including purchase history.

This is a competitor to AnyList the same way that TextEdit (which now supports full RTF formatting) is a competitor to Microsoft Word.

To be sure, this sounds like a great feature that many will appreciate; and it’s not hard imagining quite a few deciding that this is all that they need, obviating the need for them for AnyList.

But AnyList has had for a loooong time full recipe integration … as in, you can be following along in the kitchen with a recipe, realize that this recipe you’re working on just put a big dent in your supply of almonds, and tap right there to add that ingredient to your list. Or you can use it for meal planning and either selectively add ingredients to the list or tap a button to add everything.

I haven’t used it, but it also supports full Instacart integration, too. I can easily imagine that, were I an Instacart user, I’d be totally all over that one.

if the AnyList marketing team is as good as I suspect they are, they’ll leverage off of this … let people know that, yes, this is a great new feature for Apple to have added … but AnyList can do that and so much more. After all, the sort of person who’s likely to get excited about this feature is likely to get even more excited about what AnyList can do …

I personally use Paprika for recipes, easily the most used app I have and imo tho most intuitive recipe app out there, plus it isn't a subscription. Shame they don't get more press.

I've been paying for AnyList complete for years and have no interest in the recipe functionality. It's like a baby version of Paprika.

I use the Walmart/Instacart integration, it's alright but honestly faster to use a computer to shop online.

Get sherlocked AnyList, OurGroceries, Grocery

Assuming it actually learns when you manually categorize things that is.
One feature of OurGroceries that keeps me there is remembering past items. I can type "enj" and "enjoy life chocolate chips" cokes right up and I can tap to add it. Quicker than typing out the full name or asking Siri to add it.

There's nothing dairy about Almond Milk either... hint: there is no milk in almond 'milk'. But tofu, almond milk, oat milk, are all usually in the same section as milk, eggs, cheese.

I’m losing my mind, where is this option exactly?? I tried creating a new list and there’s no mention of setting the “type” of list or any mention of a grocery setting

All I see is a field to type the name of my list and the icon and color picker - nothing else.

I am liking where this is heading. I’m not a reminders power user but I am a heavy user of reminders and shared lists.

Oh my gawd. This finally might help me push my parents into using their phones as a shopping list. It's not much, but every little thing counts.

Yes.. share the list and it does exactly that. My wife and i do this regularly.

Yes, AnyList works with the Apple Watch. You can add/tick off items from your wrist.

Maybe nice feature but stores by me seem to have stuff all over the place, at least 6 cold sections in different locations in store. Also apple need to sort out the constant searching problems, ie, capital on first letter of iPhone stopped being found when it worked previously, or having to de-select all items and then select again individually for it to work.

We regularly use around five supermarkets, a butcher, and lots of "other" shops (deli, milk on farm, etc.)

And some products only available in one, or the make in another is unacceptable.

And every one is laid out differently. With some things changing around almost every visit.

And every one making different decisions about the relatively arbitrary categories like whether yogurt is with other dairy or on its own.

We use a piece of paper. And what is stored in our brains.
