Whether owners of Apple devices want to believe it or not. Some of these features are ON DEVICE SURVEILLANCE and its obviously going to be rolled out as a safety feature, but it is ON DEVICE SURVEILLANCE. Effectively it creates the potential for a backdoor to everything on your devices, which is precisely what the FBI and some governments have been pressing Apple for.

It makes end to end encryption worthless, because on your device APPLE ARE SCRUTINISING what is on it, or anyone else pulling Apple's levers!

We know they acquiesce to China, and this looks like they are now bending over to the others who want TOTAL SURVEILLANCE.

It makes Apples comments about privacy look absolutely stupid.

Even during the CSAM posts on here it was clear that there was a campaign no doubt by Apple to have multiple posts supporting their ON DEVICE SURVEILLANCE but where industry and privacy watchdogs made it clear it was a very bad move and Apple went back, only to wait to bring it in again in the guise of yet another moral safety feature, but where in reality it is YOUR device under surveillance. May be for nude photos at first but that ON DEVICE SURVEILLANCE opens the backdoor.....and everything else follows.

You have some links to write ups on this?

Based on most human history I’m always very skeptical when something is done for “the children”

Specific when I need to give up my security, and even more so when “to fight kiddie porn” listed as the reason, thing about that is it’s a cheat code, because to say you don’t support some back door into your device, or being monitored, well if you go against something marketed at “stopping kiddie porn” we’ll now you must be for kiddie porn, when in all reality its simply because you don’t want anyone but you accessing your own data and your own computer

“Well we’re only interested in those files that everyone agrees are evil, and we pinky swear that’s it”
If you believe that 😂

So good rule of thumb, when something is “for the children” be very very skeptical of it, when they mention “kiddie porn” it’s normally because the BS they are trying to pull wouldn’t even work with a “for the children” argument, so they have to dial it up to the proverbial 11

Wow creepy crap right here ^

So what does “flag” mean? It sends notification of the event to a party outside of the phone?

And they are going to roll this into the “secure” FaceTime?

Seems pretty easy to change it from looking for boobs to looking for the face of a political protestor, and change the flag from going to mommy to going to big daddy government

This is not a good path

I’ll be sitting this update out, I don’t care what moral high ground they are trying to sell, I don’t use their iCloud because it’s someone else computer, and I sure don’t need these malware tools being implemented on my expensive device

No. It notifies you and only you.

As long as it notifies no other person, this is fine. It’s no different than when your photos get scanned and it says “there’s a cat in that photo” and updates its internal index with that pattern so you can search “cat” and it shows up in Spotlight.

You can turn it off, but regardless these scanning tools are already there, it scans your photos for indexing. It’s no different than how it is for a few generations of iOS. So you should’ve left like 4 years ago.

Sure they would. They did. There are several things Apple can’t crack, including the local device and things like health data in iCloud. More with ADP.
Or can they? There’s no independent audit for some of those claims and we can only take their word for it, and knowing mega corp, I have no faith.
But you are right on this one:
You’re free to speculate of course.

Chances are the only choice you have is to formally request Apple to delete all of your data and all backups of those data (whether they will truly comply is another matter entirely) plus destroy/sell all your Apple devices to make ToS no longer applicable, to protect yourself from ”Apple malware” as you call it.
It’s also funny, those who say others should not hide anything if they are “innocent”, why is it laughably always that they don’t live by the words they expect others to live by?
Typical human nature of saying one thing while doing the other, tho using that screenshot may not be appropriate to prove your point.

I have never used apples “cloud”

It’s hard these days to maintain good safety when all these publicly traded companies are building in back doors and creepy “features”

I mean, economy of scale and mega corp crushing competitors. Capitalism at its finest. Build first, think consequences later, earn quick cash, whats happening afterwards is not my issue anymore. Had people wanting to earn money being slightly more responsible for their actions, the world probably would be a far better place. But no, everything throws out of window As long as money is involved.

I’d say using passcode for everything has already gone too far. Those 4-digit or 6-digit number Carries way too much above their Pay grade. Yes I don’t use digits but that’s not the point.

They can have those records. They may choose not to. Since no modern Apple device can function properly with absolute 0 internet connection, they can just chug passcode combination into part of their telemetry and collect it that way. I even choose to believe Apple has full access to everyone’s data stored locally regardless, tho independent security experts can prove otherwise, and what I say is just pure hypocrisy.

Yeah. Apple REALLY hate giving away details that truly matters. For example, not until little snitch carefully monitor the macOS does researcher finds out Apple phoning home on a regular basis, bypassing their own firewall.

But then, no one would improve the security to A point that creator cannot crack anymore. That makes sense, right?

Apple cares about security when they can get PR advantage, and when they safeguard their user Data (e.g. Purchasing history, salary estimate, browsing behavior, movement records etc etc. Maybe some stored data on device as well). Outside of these, I’d say they don’t care.
I hate to agree with this, but I do.

I always loved Apples focus on security and preferred this over having a decent Siri (if that truly is why it’s so crap).

But when I saw the kind of bending over backwards they’re doing for the Chinese government, it makes me wonder, what are they doing for our governments?

It also wouldn’t be too crazy to wonder if select news stories about how they stand up to the US FBI etc, weren’t orchestrated to keep us believing it’s secure when maybe it’s not.

I’m surprised really

Somehow people are cool with spending 4 figures on a phone, you’d think there would be a good alternate from Apple and creepy google

If there was a nice phone with good build materials like sapphire stainless etc, running some Linux distro that wasnt mangled with google reporting stuff, good security and features, ideally built in the US, or at least in the free world, I’d be all over that

Especially if it could somehow emulate iOS and run a iOS program

I would think at the price point we would have more competition other the Apple and android

what is apple’s twisted fascination with blocking nudity but not violence and gore? the sharing of graphic violence is far more traumatizing and widespread that nudity

So you’re saying there no sex in your violence? Lol

Maybe just don’t censor anything

Because violence and gore are much more acceptable in American society than sex in any form. So they're just trying to keep Americans happy.
Which makes me wonder, why ”that site” can exist in USA of sex and nudity is considered So offensive.
Anyway, the point is, there are more things to worry about than just nudity. Picking nudity to prioritise is just…it feels wrong. Besides, if violence and gore are more acceptable, does that mean American people place no value on human life?

Well there's no central suthority to decide these things. It's usually at the local level.

This country was founded on violence and it's considered a viable method of achieving one's aims.

Historically that’s how the entire world has always worked, go turn on National Geographic 😂

“Excuse me Mr Zebra, would you mind please stopping and laying down so I might eat you?”

Going back to the thread title I don’t see any “safety” improvements

Seems like it’s added censorship and monitoring as well as offline maps

Safety would be like improvements to satellite messaging, better encryption, maybe even using the LiDAR for night vision, etc

this isn’t true at all. shows with nudity consistently do well. the reason there’s a perception of what you state is because of how media guidelines are structured, which is not the same as what the society wants.

also the reason why there’s a push to censor nudity is because of radical christianity’s lust for indoctrinating the public by grasping and influencing media, which is what the other poster is referring to regarding p*rnhub

I'm talking network TV, not purchased programming.

I wish Apple would bring Kevin Mitnick and Snowden onto their team
Snowden? What, so he can fall out with them, leak all their secrets to the world and run away?! Not a chance. Despite all the reasonable logic of your post on this topic.

All of these features are really useful
ONLY if it actually works as advertised!
iOS 17 makes all iPhones near perfection :)
Only thing missing right this moment is iPhone 15 Ultra.
Consider what I mention below you may have another thought
As a clumsy, forgetful klutz at times, the medication reminder is one of my favorite features.
Trust me iOS at times is MUCH more forgetful a klutz at times.

I had a REALLY CRAPPY and TIME WASTING issue Monday.

iOS Advanced Data Protection!
Failed to work as advertised.
I changed my device passcode (admittedly in a rush, dumb move on my part), and forgotten it.
I already setup 2 people a friend and my son for recovery contacts for this feature.
my iPhone is not set to delete data upon 10 attempts.
I go through the motions trying what I thought the password I recently changed Sunday not was to be: I was wrong.
5 attempts waiting for 3hrs before retry.
I reached out to Apple Support on twitter.

NOTE:
I live by myself,
I have only 1 phone line and on iOS in iPhone 12 mini.
I have 2 home internet connections - THIS was a LIFE saver.
my MBP is encrypted (File Vault) and my user account is separate from my admin account.

Apple Documentation and Support failures:
1. NO PROMPT was ever shown to me so that my emergency contacts would be prompted to help unlock my iPhone.
2. NO PROMPT was received to my emergency contacts for Advanced Data Protection.
3. ALL iOS Services were in DEAD LOCK:
Sign into iCloud via web browser on Mac/Windows (same MBP) - no prompt for 2FA, password just cycled forever!
iMessage no longer worked on Mac both sending/receiving.
SMS forwarding to Mac also stopped both sending/receiving.
FaceTime Audio calls also failed both sending/receiving. As well as video calls!
iCloud emails also STOPPED both sending/receiving.
Inbound calls to my mobile number also STOPPED.
I could NOT Turn off Advanced Data Protection in my MBP in System Settings either!!
I could not even sign into my bank to place money for an Uber nor to update my transit card for local TTC to get to the closest Apple Store! THIS IS BECAUSE 2FA STOPS due to this Advanced Data Protection!
ARRRGH! I was to take my beautiful butterfly girlfriend out on a date and to her for 5hrs+ it looked like I had ghosted her!

Apple Support (Twitters) solution:
Restart your Mac and iPhone!
Like What in the actual $&@^!? Seriously? Seriously!
In all my life using computers 38yrs and 16yrs working in I.T. desktop, mobile, VC audio/visual support I've NEVER felt like throwing ANY of my tech to the floor or wall or out the window and I came THIS CLOSE (7 seconds!) to doing so!

I took a breather: then my skills kicked in.
Solution: I changed from Rogers Ignite Cable Internet (which doesn't block Apple's Email Relay), back to Bell Fibre (which does block Apple's Relay) and VOILA issue resolved!!
Then I spent the next 2-3hrs restoring apps, music, sms and iMessage history and app data!

Like seriously Apple has a partnership for iPhones, Watch and even iPads for sale at BOTH Bell and Rogers, so why is one blocked for 1 of their services and not the other - oppositely?!

So yeah I don't have much faith this week that ANY new feature should work nor should be welcomed unless Apple FULLY exhausts all potentials in testing existing apps and features WORK!

Or how about able crippling devices in some countries

Device is on the same band

My provider has coverage

Device doesn’t work

It's been my experience that telecommunications is the most horrible jungle to navigate. Every country has their own system and they all have to interoperate to work. And the local companies aren't much better.
