I’m really curious how they will approach alternative app stores. I can’t imagine they will allow it to be a free-for-all, but I’m also not clear on what this EU law specifically requires or otherwise implies.
FWIW, here's the text from the regulation:

The gatekeeper shall allow and technically enable the installation and effective use of third-party software applications or software application stores using, or interoperating with, its operating system and allow those software applications or software application stores to be accessed by means other than the relevant core platform services of that gatekeeper. The gatekeeper shall, where applicable, not prevent the downloaded third-party software applications or software application stores from prompting end users to decide whether they want to set that downloaded software application or software application store as their default. The gatekeeper shall technically enable end users who decide to set that downloaded software application or software application store as their default to carry out that change easily.

The gatekeeper shall not be prevented from taking, to the extent that they are strictly necessary and proportionate, measures to ensure that third-party software applications or software application stores do not endanger the integrity of the hardware or operating system provided by the gatekeeper, provided that such measures are duly justified by the gatekeeper.

Furthermore, the gatekeeper shall not be prevented from applying, to the extent that they are strictly necessary and proportionate, measures and settings other than default settings, enabling end users to effectively protect security in relation to third-party software applications or software application stores, provided that such measures and settings other than default settings are duly justified by the gatekeeper.

Basically, only restrictions that are strictly necessary for security and integrity of the OS/hardware are allowed. It will be interesting how this will play out.

Note that this will only become mandatory in March 2024, so may not be part of the initial iOS 17 release.

I'm excited to see what new features iOS 17 will bring! We can expect improved performance, advanced security measures, new messaging services, and expanded AR/VR capabilities. I'm sure Apple will continue to stay ahead of the curve and deliver an even better mobile experience in the future!

I believe Apple should also be granted the right to void all device warranties for consumers that opt in to side load malware and viruses. I will be remaining within the App Store to protect myself, my data, my financial assets, my identity and devices' optimal operational efficiency including safety should that stupid legislation come into effect in my country. Isn't that why there are many cat avatars instead of our faces on MacRumours (and no - I am not ugly)?

Also from the DMA:

The gatekeeper shall not require end users to use, or business users to use, to offer, or to interoperate with, an identification service, a web browser engine or a payment service, or technical services that support the provision of payment services, such as payment systems for in-app purchases, of that gatekeeper in the context of services provided by the business users using that gatekeeper’s core platform services.

And Apple HAS to comply. So there are more changes to come.

The ’ search’ is limited!
When searching for apps installed it rarely finds them.
When searching for contacts it does better, but doesn’t shoe the postcode (zip code) for typing into my satnav.

In fact o rarely use it, it’s that weak.

Love the sound of active widgets.

It would be amazing to have a music widget that instead of launching a recently listened to album displayed play, forward and back icons and took you to what was playing.

For Apple TV users, an app with similar interactive play, forwards and back would be really useful.

Reminders check lists could be interactive as well.

"There's been a lot of attention on ChatGPT and other chatbot experiences that use AI trained on web content, but we're not expecting anything quite that advanced from Apple."

This tech is only revolutionizing everything it touches. Apple can't stay behind.

"Seven Features That Might Be Coming to the iPhone This Fall"

I love these conjectures, promises, and outlooks. I do the same:

"Seven Features That Might Be Coming to Edsel This Fall" - Lose 30 pounds, hair graft my bald scalp, join a gym, eat healthy, stop drinking so much beer, clean apartment, and a get new job.

Will this really happen for Apple, or for me? Doubtful.

;)

I would like them to fix that bug where the touch screen stops responding to touch for a while or until I lock the phone with the side button and unlock it again.

Nothing like spending 5 minutes on hold with an automated phone system and have it ask you to press 1 or 2 to be connected to the right person and you cannot press either so it hangs up on you and you have to start over again.
You need to fully reset your phone. I haven’t ever had this problem even when I was using iPhone X last year.

I’m not really exited. Why? We have already 16 versions, and none of them is bug-free. So please Apple, solve the bugs and than develop new versions.

If there was ever a time to prioritize we are at that point. Especially given that expectation of using iOS 17 as a new baseline of how iOS should be working versus App Store changes and revisiting what the user community wants against how most things should be implemented. Should keep staff busy for months fixing and improving iOS 17. ;)

I’d like landscape orientation lock to work on iPhones, just as it does on iPads. iPhones are used for watching video, and it is annoying when the screen switches to portrait.

You wanna side load?
Go ahead.
Just don't come here crying when some African Prince side loads your bank account to his.

Oh great, now instead of having search in 4 different locations with three different styles, Apple will have 8 locations with 7 different styles. Why does search need to be in so many different locations? Why not make it simple?

Control center has been bad for years. 90% of it is pointless. Can’t turn off wifi or Bluetooth which makes those two buttons 100% pointless. Meanwhile airdrop and hotspot are hidden.

Active widgets could be cool, but 99% of the current widgets today suck. Who needs to see a list of the three most recent files they’ve touched? I deal with 100s of files a day. 3 is 30 seconds of my life.

If Apple makes sideloading only possible in the EU, could you change your location to a EU country. In the past we in the EU had some problems with software. Copyright laws restricted the speed of scanners in the EU to make it harder to scan whole books. So you had to install a US driver for the scanner and suddenly it was much faster. Aren't American customers quite angry if people in the EU have a feature that they do not have?
