A related feature would be a location-aware function preventing users from turning on the flashlight to read menus in dark restaurants. It’s helpful but I get chided every time I do that by my wife who thinks it makes me look like an old guy.

I would like that location-aware function applied to enabling speaker phone mode in a restaurant also. One time in the past there was this guy actually eating and attending a business conference call that everyone could hear.

That's what it is. When I say app dock I mean when you swipe to the right and you have the groups of apps. APP DOCK. He is talking about something completely different. Apples "app dock" is horrendous. Stuff always moving around with no way to stop it. etc.

Oh, If I understand correctly, that is the App Library. I mainly use that to search for app, not to find them by browsing. Apps are organized by App store categories that is that not always what you think. Also the apps move as you use them. The recent apps are moved up in the list. It makes sense if you use apps repeatedly but if you are a visual browser that can be disconcerting.

Maybe they should add the tick-tock sound that plays when the flashlight is on like when you leave the turn signal on. Of course not everyone notices that sound, either, so that may not fix the problem. 😊

• Stage Manager refinements for iPadOS 17. New “clamshell mode” allows the iPad’s display to be put to sleep while the connected monitor still functions.
• Backup to external drives for iOS 17 and iPadOS 17 as an option in addition to iCloud backups. This is currently possible by backing up to a PC, but it would be more handy to be able to backup to just a drive.

They’d have to come up with some software way to lock the iPad, like on the Mac, you’d put it to sleep from the Apple menu. If I have my iPad docked somewhere on my desk, I’m way too lazy to reach over and hit the power/lock button to lock it. I believe CMD+Ctrl+Q locks it, but the average person won’t know this.

In addition to the local backups without a computer, there should be a way to restore an iPhone or iPad without a PC/Mac as well. Restoring a Mac from the internet has existed for years, it’s about time this feature should come to the iDevices.

I think I'm looking more forward to the Watch OS10 announcement than IOS 17, but it will be exciting to get some new features (And hopefully most bug updates). I'm interested in this making the lock screen a home smart device feature. I feel like the Lock Screen can have more done with it to make it seem a little more interactive.

Now, I’m not saying that Apple is going to ignore the iPhone completely at WWDC 2023. iOS 17 is expected to include a raft of new features, including a clever smart display function and, very likely, the momentous ability to install apps from third-party stores without jailbreaking. But most pundits agree that this is going to be a quiet update with no “tentpole improvement.” It’ll be about fixing bugs and improving reliability, with a few “nice to have” new features chucked in as a bonus.

And these, remember, are the flagship products. iPhone and Mac, side by side, dragging Cupertino out of its 90s doldrums and making it the envy of Wall Street and Silicon Valley alike. Surely Apple has something to say about these titanic product lines that’s worth hearing? Perhaps not.

Instead, the highlights of WWDC 2023 are likely to sit in two categories: the mixed reality headset, and watchOS 10. Reality Pro is certainly an interesting prospect to me, given that it’s an entirely new product line that could eventually be more important to Apple’s fortunes than the iPhone.

I’ve noticed that Apple’s icons for new apps this year have had a bit more depth to them than most system app icons on iOS. For example: the icons for Apple Music Classical, Final Cut Pro, and Logic Pro all have a bit more shading, gradient and depth to them. Compare those against the icons for Mail, Messages, and other system apps, and there seems to be a bit of a difference in style. So I’m really hoping for some new app icons for iOS! They don’t have to be radically different, I’m hoping for something similar to macOS app icons. Like the Mail icon actually has an envelope, instead of the ugly flat design. Here’s for hoping! 👍🏻

I am hoping we can choose what icons we want to use at the system level. It's time Apple!

No concerns for me at all. You’re not going to get blockbuster features every year. And the stuff I’ve heard rumors about sound pretty good as it is.

I am hoping we can choose what icons we want to use at the system level. It's time Apple!

I agree, customizable app icons would be really nice. But if not, I’d settle for the neumorphic-esque ones from macOS, or similar since that’s what I’d customize them as anyways. But I’m really hoping for customizable icons because that would be the best option for everyone! 👍🏻

Thats just the press's expectations, somewhat dulled by the fact that Apple has been fairly ruthless to silencing everything before this show. Also Mark Gurmans lacking insight predictions heavily used by the press are not particular useful. 😉

I am just continuing to hope for more under the hood iOS/IPadOS 17.x improvements such as several GUI interface/Multitasking improvements discussed. Given the improvements with recent hardware, and the fact they haven't done any of this the last few years, along with the EU side loading, seems the right time for this to finally occur. 😎

I don’t think we’re getting the full picture, and I think the fact that Apple decided to announce Final Cut Pro and Logic Pro for iPad like two weeks ahead of WWDC instead of using that as one of their big iPadOS announcements might speak volumes. I’m hoping something big for iPadOS is coming!

I think they’re going to devote at least 30 minutes and perhaps more to the headset. That’s why the 2 iPad apps were likely released early. No time for them. Might even see new macs get the same treatment (except Mac Pro, if introduced).

I think you’ll find that’s the same story for the other OSes too. Not as much screen time as usual. And likely less in the way of new features given the amount of development time devoted to the headset.

I really hope that’s not the case. 🙁. Give us a five to ten minute sneak peek at the headset, then move on and provide a longer video about it separately. Of course, I doubt that’s going to happen, but hopefully not a whole half-hour! 🙁

I really hope that’s what they do, a headset priced at $3,000 wouldn’t be of any interest to me. I don’t mind if they make one, but I really hope that iOS and iPadOS aren’t gonna suffer for it this year just because they decided to make a new product I’m not really that interested in. Personally, I think both could be true, iOS and iPadOS could be getting some big updates AND a new AR/VR headset could be launched. People assume that creating an xrOS would obviously mean less development on iOS and iPadOS, but I’d like to counter that a bit by pointing out that xrOS would likely be a form of iOS, so it’s not exactly like they’re building an entirely new OS from the ground up. Besides, I’m guessing if they are going to launch a headset, they’ve probably been working on the OS for it for the last couple of years. I doubt they would be so last minute. But maybe I’m wrong. 🤷🏼‍♂️

I want them to make changes to notifications. I tap the status bar a lot to get to the top of the screen, and I always accidentally tap notifications and it interrupts what I'm doing. Give us an option to pop up at the bottom of the screen.

I remember during Tim Cooks GQ interview how much he avoided answering any related questions.

“If you think about the technology itself with augmented reality, just to take one side of the AR/VR piece, the idea that you could overlay the physical world with things from the digital world could greatly enhance people’s communication, people’s connection,” Cook says. “It could empower people to achieve things they couldn’t achieve before. We might be able to collaborate on something much easier if we were sitting here brainstorming about it and all of a sudden we could pull up something digitally and both see it and begin to collaborate on it and create with it. And so it’s the idea that there is this environment that may be even better than just the real world—to overlay the virtual world on top of it might be an even better world. And so this is exciting. If it could accelerate creativity, if it could just help you do things that you do all day long and you didn’t really think about doing them in a different way.”

Yes it clearly shows a iPhone and iPad as showing a software implementation of AR.

It's like he's waving a big sign saying here it is but the press are like hunting dogs fixated on the wrong scent.

At least we don't have that long to see if Apple is finally taking the next logical step be it software with iOS/IPadOS 17.x or hardware implementation. 😉

I don’t mind if the headset’s coming, I just don’t want it to come at the expense of iOS and iPadOS. I for one, think iOS and iPadOS will still be big updates.
