Question: does your mum keep her iOS up to date?
She does because I keep her updated on this.

Automatic updates are enabled, so when they eventually come up, she's actually quite proactive about it (although she couldn't tell you what the updates do).

That's good news. Hopefully that means that my iPhone XR and iPad Pro 12.9 2017 will get iOS 18 in the fall 2024.

Although, if I remember correctly, iOS16 dropped support for two generations of devices, so it's really hard to predict with them

What? Why would that be unsupported? iPhone XR is running on A12. You just read an article claiming that devices with A11 might get iOS17.
It’s not that uncommon for people to think that XR is a variant of X. Even a tech site likes The Verge make the mistake of grouping X and XR together. Here from an article just a few weeks old about the 16.5 beta:

Of course, XR belongs with XS.

A side note: I have an XR and never got the new weather animations, even though I think all A12 devices should support them?

My mom still rocking my 8 Plus I gave her. No complaints on its performance for what she uses it for. A11 is still a pretty powerful chip. Heck she still uses her iPad 5th Gen with the A9 in it as her bedroom device even though she’s got a 9th Gen I got her for Christmas lol

I'm still rocking my 8-plus - cracked screen and all. Gifted my wife's 8-plus to our son to use to call us since she got a new iPhone 13.

I'm debating whether to try to wait it out for the 15-pro or just grab a 14-pro now.

This is more inline with what I expected. I wonder if any of the iPads will be dropped? I'm guessing no devices with iOS/iPadOS 17, with a lot of devices dropped with iOS/iPadOS 18 moving to A12 and newer devices only, meaning iOS 17 would also be receiving long term security updates.

I think it's a good bet iPad Pro 2017 gets 18. Why? Because the seventh generation iPad is running an A10 chip and 5 years of support means it too will get 18. The iPad Pro (2017) has the A10X and more RAM than the seventh gen.

I have no patience that way lol. My wife took over my 13 pro max and I got a 14 pro max. Though this year I’ll probably skip the 15 series. Like to hold out for a bigger upgrade this time around. I barely utilize the power and features on my 14

So does this mean iPhone XR won't be supported anymore?
The XR isn't on the chopping block yet. Rumors this year are around whether or not A11 based iPhones (8, 8 Plus and X) released in fall 2017 will be able to update to iOS 17 this fall. The XR has an A12 (same as the XS and XS Max) and was released in 2018. Should be fine until at least fall 2024, and probably longer.

It's kind of amazing how long Apple supports it's phones. I bought the Pixel 3a in Dec. 2019 to replace the iPhone 8. (Just missed Android at the time.) I gave the iPhone 8 to my cousin which she still uses to this day. The Pixel 3a stopped receiving updates in May 2022, and my cousin's iPhone 8 still receives updates with the possibility of getting iOS 17!

I'm on a Samsung A53, though I might pick up a refurb iPhone in the future to swap between devices.

Yeah, I tend to keep a backup phone and most recently it was a Pixel 4a. Despite buying it new shortly after it was released in 2020 it will be cutoff from software and security updates this August, after just 3 years. I don't think I'll be buying any more Android phones.

LOL. What's funny is you think Apple is reading these forums and adjusting accordingly. I'm sure their plans were fixed long ago and they may just be leaking different rumors as misdirects or to find the mole.
This LOL.

The leaker who said that the 8/8+/X would be dropped in iOS 17 was probably grinning watching everyone freak out and YouTubers make content about it. All ego reasons really

Apple knows way in advance, things like this are pretty much set in stone

This is what I was trying to explain yesterday:
If their latest claim is accurate, it would not be the first time that Apple has maintained the same list of compatible devices between major iOS releases. For example, iOS 15 is compatible with all devices that can run iOS 14, although some iOS 15 features are not available on older iPhones. In contrast, iOS 16 dropped support for some older devices, including the iPhone SE, the iPhone 6s, the ‌iPhone‌ 6s Plus, the iPod touch, and the ‌iPhone‌ 7 and ‌iPhone‌ 7 Plus.

Apple has not introduced performance impacting features to iOS in years. Personally, I believe Apple could support devices as far back as the A7.
While the A7 is a more than capable enough chip for basic computing, all the A7 devices only came with 1GB of RAM, which is ultimately what did them in. 2GB on the other hand seems to be holding up ok as long as you are only really using 1 app at a time and/or don't mind your app reloading every time you switch between apps.

I still think the iPhone 7 can run iOS 16, albeit with some features disabled.

I believe they could keep the foot print within the same envelope as previous iOS releases, while raising for modern iOS devices. Opening an email and listening music should be sufficient. If you are going to run Chrome, multiple tabs and expect PIP, then no, you are not gonna get that functionality on 1 or 2 GB device. Also, opportunity for upsell to services like iCloud. Just remembering my kareoke buddy who had a first gen iPhone SE for the longest while.

even with the last minute new features rumored, a refinement update wouldn't make sense dropping any devices. i'm predicting there will be stuff exclusive to newer devices but for the most part, it seems likely that ios 17 will support the a11. as for ipad? yeah dropping devices there seems more likely since they're much older devices

Yeah, I agree. In fact since the iPad 5th gen is running iPadOS 16 fine I'm sure the 6s could also handle iOS 16, it would just come down to what features wouldn't be available. A bunch of features that require ML already aren't available on A11 devices since it has a fairly basic neural engine compared to later devices.

I love that Apple supports its devices for so long, it's unreal for Android phones
Apple's update approach is a monolithic update. Android's approach is OS seperate from the systems apps. You have to take the good with the bad with Apple's way. BUT you get the latest OS update. Android you get to pick and choose with system apps you install. Even 10 year old android phones can have the latest gmail and chrome. BUT you're SOL interms of OS update.
If it supports the older phones that’s a sign it’s going to be a minor update with nothing interesting or power hungry that’s just iOS 16 wrapped in a new skin so not a good thing
So streamlining the OS and systems apps? So it's nut'n' but a bug hunt update.🤔 Yeehaw!🤠 That's my kind of update.🤠🤠
