Not of interest to me - I wear hear aids. First battery life esn't long enough to replace real hearing aids. Second I wouldn't want to be in a meeting or some social event, etc. and have people think I'm listening to music or ? on my iPods Who knows.

Reasons things are available everywhere is lawyers
Would the ability to listen to music/films with appropriately boosted frequencies not have any appeal?

Why can't Apple just market these features with a disclaimer in countries where it hasn't been approved? It's so absurd to deny the rest of the world this stuff.

The only ones "denying" anyone this stuff are the governments of the individual countries that choose to drag their feet on things. A few countries just approved Apple Pay this summer, and that's a decade late. Why should Apple have to produce special advertising by geography when they have no guidance on when things even could be available.

There is an entity called the United Nations, and in this day and age, they should establish global regulatory requirements for essential health-related products. The same applies to all the heart-related apps on the Apple Watch, which are only available in certain countries due to localization—something that shouldn't even exist nowadays.

The UN is there for political communication, not to get into trade issues. That's the purvue of the WEF and the World Bank, etc.

Or maybe it's just that 'Region' setting rather than anything more sinister?
I doubt. When you turn on the phone you already connect to the towers, the system to the iCloud, in my case all traffic will go trought Apple's servers... a simple setting changes nothing. I hope they release it here soon where health ear devices are very expansives.

Why do you think they are denying anything?

These are advanced health features that require extensive approval from stage bodies.

If you have anything to protests, you can petition your government to accelerate reviews and approval of such technologies.

there are reports in the japanese media that indicate that apple has already received certification for iPods Pro 2 with these software updates to be released in japan.
there are various classifications of what people generally call "hearing aid devices".
it seems that they cant be marketed as a "hearing aid" (my term for it), but will be marketed using a term something like a "hearing assist device" (my term for it).

nevertheless, its great news.

I'm looking forward to this function, one reason I got the Pro 2. One question I have not been able to find the answer to is how will this work if only one ear has hearing problems. I lost 100% hearing in one ear due to a tumor, the other side works but is having some mid-frequency loss. Be interested to see how this rolls out.

I’m pretty sure the person wants the AirPods to act as a hearing aid, not just get a hearing test done.
As this had to be approved by the FDA, I would assume the health authorities of any region would have to also approve them. UNLESS it’s a region that just allows anyone to say any device is a hearing aid.

Hearing Protection is already a feature though, so what’s different about it? They released it last year with the keynote demo of someone walking through a construction site and the airpods limits sounds to 80 dbs

The less features they give them the less the idiots can sue/whine about.
I know, right? How dare they looking out for their people instead of just bending over for the multi trillion $ companies to *** them over. I’m looking forward to the moment when the EU fines Apple for withholding features from EU citizens.

In Canada on 18.1 RC.
Hearing protection is available
Hearing test, hearing aid is not.
I tried changing region to US and did not enable :(

I don't have the setting in Canada on 18.1 RC and the latest Airpods Pro 2 firmware. What gives?

Gleichfalls.

I didn’t see with location set to CH.
Set to US and then took test.
Audiogram matches that from my audiologist.
Set up hearing aid.
Set country back to CH and function is still there.
Have really been looking forward to this.
I am in Switzerland, region set to Switzerland (way before the iOS 18.1 beta even started) and I still got to take the test.

The WHO is part of the UN and already undertakes Health Technology Assessments (HTAs) on global products, and issues guidance and policy on which most countries' local regulators base their certification requirements and processes.
As I repeat myself, do not let them have global control over anything.

I’ve never been able to find buds that fit my large ears properly to completely make use of noise cancellation . Will I still benefit from hearing aid?
I was having issues with my AirPods Pro 2 and learned there are tons of aftermarket foam tips available on Amazon. Have you checked them out?

That my friends is a story for the Pro 3. 😉Seriously though you bring up a good point. I'm guessing you have to wear them both, but with the results of the test one side will be boosted more than the other.

They can't do that.. lol.

I do have to have both in for noise cancellation to work. But I'm wondering how the hearing test will work for an ear that has no hearing at all. Hopefully testing each ear independently of each other would be best.

I'm confused are these features available on the original Airpods Pro? or just for the new airpods pro v2?
