I love it on spam calls. Just click it and as soon as they hear this call is being recorded they immediately hang up lol.
When I heard they were coming out with this I started answering unidentified numbers with “This call is being recorded for quality purposes”. It is amazing how quickly they hang up. Now I’ll just have to click a button. ;)

I’m not even going to ask if this is US english only.

Just don’t understand why. Google and plenty of third party apps support almost all languages in the world for this type of features.

Recording a phone call without consent of all parties is generally a felony in most states.

Some US states are one-party states; which is why it is important to know the law so you can legally record someone without notifying/getting consent to record.

There have ben a number of high profile cases where someone broke the law or discovered they could be recorded without their knowledge and later embarrassed.

For those that use an auto - dialer and then connect you could start it before a human gets the call routed to them.

It's a good point

I'm not really sure where I stand on Apple defaulting to requiring notification given the disparities in the law

I think it somewhat falls into the "this should be up to the user", but I'm open to persuasion either way on this feature I suppose

It has to announce. Apple would be in class action land before they knew it if there was no announcement. Also, imagine if a judge threw out recorded evidence in a criminal trial because Apple did not announce the recording. Whoa!

Second the ability to disable the announcement, but I'm sure Apple would have to find a way to implement this with GPS. Georgia is a one-party consent state, but if I travel to another state, that state's laws apply recording need for two-party consent.

It's doable to use GPS to do this, but probably would take a lot of effort that Apple probably doesn't even want to dive into.

As I understand it, it's based on where you are and where the call terminates. If you're calling a two-party state from a one-party state, it's legally a two-party consent required call. That would make things complicated, especially when you have no real idea where the call is going.

I wonder if anyone will try and record an Apple Support call. lol That would surely come in handy if the customer was given the wrong information or lied to.
No different than getting a copy of the transcript if you use their support chat, which you've always been able to do.

False.

37 states and DC are actually one-party consent states. The caller themselves, if a participant, counts.

Of the remaining states, 11 are two-party consent and 2 (Connecticut and Oregon) are mixed consent.

People should familiarize themselves with the law in their state as some states have exceptions.

Regardless, it is NOT the case that recording another person on the phone without their consent is illegal in “most” states. Quite the opposite.

In a world (no pun intended) where spoofing locations is becoming more and more common, I see no chance of this happening.

Definitely a joke the name of the caller ("Francesco") that is an italian one while in Italy, like the rest of Europe (I guess) is not available while Google has a "stock" dialer able to record in EU since at least 2019...

I would love to have an automatic transcription function that I can turn on so all calls are transcribed — and displayed in real-time while in speakerphone mode. Transcribing a call has no legal requirement to notify, it just becomes a text document. This would be super handy for a lot of technical info that gets discussed or client requests. There have been times I’m physically tied up — like on a ladder or in a tight space, or even just driving, where I’ll have to tell someone to just text or email me the details or call back and leave a voicemail. To be able to have a direct discussion while it all gets transcribed automatically without having to tap a button on each call and playing a notice of recording would be excellent.

Not sure it would happen though, even though transcribing doesn’t need the legal notice. It still requires the phone / AI system to analyze the audio, which could be construed as “recording”…. Anyway, glad to have this feature.

This isn't real-time and it doesn't address your problem of talking when on the go. But...

This is a neural net OpenAI solution that in my experience works pretty well and is free:

https://openai.com/index/whisper/
https://github.com/openai/whisper

It's trained on a lot of data, and there are various thick apps that have packaged up what you see in the GitHub repo. It also has a "Pro" (paid) version that's supposed to be even better.

Voice transcription phones for the hard of hearing don’t need to make the announcement even though a transcript of the call is created.
If you don't record the conversation it is OK to record the transcription?

Any references about the legality of this?

It doesn't default to a two-party consent when you call a two-party state. 18 U.S.C. § 2511 (2) (d) requires only one-party consent. However, despite the fact that you won't be charged criminally if you call someone in a two-party state, it is unlikely that it is admissible evidence if you file litigation in a two-party state. In other words, if you call from Georgia (one-party state) to Florida (two-party state) and bring litigation in Florida, you're unlikely to be able to use the recording as evidence.

On another note, I found that conferencing a call will stop the recording. Had a call from a telemarketer and conferenced in It's Lenny. Recording stopped. Too bad because the guy went on for 10 minutes and was extremely frustrated. He finally hung up on me. LOL

cool. Can we get multiple user profiles? Would be nice to have completely separate spaces. Thank you.

Very good to have this feature on the latest version of iOS. Will definitely be useful.
