Thx for update. I still don't understand why Apple took such strange approach. They allowed modifying/editing internal iCloud.com primary/alias e-mail addresses out of the blue without officially announcing it nor updating documentation. Not Apple way, definitely.

What's interesting is that in iCloud Mail, email sent to the new iCloud address I chose does get delivered, but my old addresses are still there right now to send out email from even though they're gone from my Apple Account. I made the change about 24 hours ago, so I assume iCloud Mail will update at some point, but if it doesn't then it's definitely a sign that they rushed this out.

So it seems like you just made old e-mails aliases while creating new primary address, without deleting them? You have now new primary e-mail address and 2 aliases which aren't set up as Apple Account ids (which was always just an option for aliases), don't you? You can check it e.g. in iOS in Settings → Apple Account → iCloud → Mail → Addresses.

That would be sensible, but that's not what happened. Instead, my old addresses still appear in iCloud > Mail > Addresses, not as aliases but as the main addresses they used to be. My new address does not appear at all there, even though I receive email sent to it. It might just take more time to populate the changes, who knows.

My changes (similar but without me.com stuff) were perfectly aligned between Apple Account settings and Mail settings immediately after reconfiguration.
Thx for further explanations. There are two scenarios now: a/ Mail configuration will align with your changes eventually, b/ you’ll stay with it for some time (forever).
 
I also want to confirm that this feature now works in the public release of 18.1.
I was able to delete my original @icloud.com and replace it with a new @icloud.com address.

Quality of documentation leaves a lot to be desired (e.g. no information about me.com, mac.com domains case). Better this than nothing.

Just to answer my own question, changing Apple Account primary email from [username]@me.com to [username]@mac.com worked without issue. The @me address went back to become an alias. This of course assuming you have a grandfathered @mac.com email address.

In a scenario where you have an Apple ID with the following:

primary email address — myemail@thirdparty.com
MobileMe address — myoldaddress@me.com
iCloud address — myoldaddress@icloud.com

I've found that the "Change and Remove Email Addresses" feature that did not work in the iOS 18.1 RC does work now in the iOS 18.1 final release.

Today, I was finally able to get rid of the old @me/@icloud address that I had been stuck with for 15 years.

I can say it wasn't working for me with 18.1 final... but I tried it on iOS 18.2 beta and I was able to switch my primary address to the main iCloud address I was using. I waited a few days... and just deleted the previous iCloud.com primary address from my account. And nothing broken :)

that said, my Apple TV is showing the "new" address in settings.
but my Mac and iPhone are still showing the old address in different places... and everything is still working fine. I guess if I disconnect and reconnect the account, it will update to the new address.

Primary e-mail is updated on every device in Apple Account settings automatically - it just takes some time (days). That's my experience (did it many times). But connected services is different story. Example: Somebody shares home control through Home app with me. I lost access to their home after changing primary e-mail and deleting previous one. May be just coincidence of course. Usually, even if e-mail address in certain service configuration is not updated, such service works seamlessly.

Just to follow up, 2 weeks later, my primary iCloud Mail address finally updated to reflect the changes I made to my Apple Account. I added an alias and then removed it, which I think shook something loose and caused it to update.

How are you able to do this? I see the option to change the main Apple ID, but when I go to iCloud > Mail > Addresses it does not give me the option to rename my iCloud email only

If you go Apple Account > Sign In & Security, you can choose the email address and remove it. When you remove it, it'll ask you to create a new iCloud email at the same time.
 
I know in the past, songs/movies bought from iTunes were hardcoded with your apple ID (so much so that if you burned a data cd to give to a friend they would have to have your apple ID password to be able to import/play the song on their iTunes).

If I change the primary email on my account from the email it has been for the past 14 years, do I have any risk of not being able to access my previous purchases? What will happen to the purchases that were hard-coded with that email address?
 
Has anyone managed to delete all @icloud.com (or me/mac) addresses from the Apple Account settings, leaving an iCloud+ custom domain name as the sole email address in iCloud Mail settings?

The @icloud.com address I deleted still appears as the primary email address in iCloud Mail settings.
