Does this mean Safari will continue to run in the background? I seem to recall previously that downloads of shady roms would hang if I went to do something else.
Yes, it's news to me that downloads continue. Every time I've tried it in the past they always seem to stall (or maybe they go into some sort of battery saving super-slow download mode). It's not just when I lock my device but switching to another app seems to do it too. In fairness I'm mainly talking about my experience on the iPad, so maybe it's different from the iPhone for downloads. I normally keep Safari open using split view to make sure the download keeps going.

To heck with the naysayers - this is a cool feature! I’ll use my iPad or iPhone sometimes to download installers or media on faster networks than I have at home and being able to see the progress of the download before I leave the network area will be awesome.

And yes there’s a lot in Mobile Safari that needs improving/fixing but I doubt this took very much resources or effort to implement - like I don’t think this took away from fixing anything.

It would be amazing if Apple could stop this cosmetic nonsense and fix Safari (at least Desktop version) once and for all so users don't have to rely on Chrome every time they need to use the web properly. Many websites don't function well in Safari, which is a major issue. Overall, Apple software seems to be in a state of decline, and it's really disappointing!
that's because of web developers eager to jump on using Blink-exclusive experimental features and not coding to Web standards. Nothing Apple can do about that. Firefox is suffering from the same problem too.

Why does it matter? The issue with Safari failing to render certain websites still exists.
It matters because you are complaining about desktop Safari and this thread is about Safari in iOS. It is my opinion that your original post in this thread is off-topic.

Well there ARE websites out there where you can download Gigs worth of video files…

…but they are often compressed so you can’t unrar them without a separate app.

…and they are in a file format not recognized by iOS, so you need another app to play them.

In the end, it’s not worth the hassle and I’ll just grab my MacBook to download.

They don't. Desktop Chrome uses Blink, while Desktop Safari uses WebKit. Why does it matter? The issue with Safari failing to render certain websites still exists.
Desktop : OK?

iOS : I'm surprised about this, but it's
not totally true. This doesn't seem to be the case outside of EU.

They should get around to fixing downloads on macOS Safari, which have been broken since at least Sequoia’s release. Any download to a non-APFS/HFS drive fails upon completion, saying “unable to move file”.

I like that fact it can do that now but in reality we should have always been able todo this also we should be able to use dual windows in safari instead of using a 3rd party app also widgets need more work and functionality because to me they just seem like shortcuts in my opinion apple don’t really listen to the Consumers at all

I’m not sure if it was said anywhere, but printing progress as a live activity is new on 18.2 too. (Edit: this was actually there on 18.1)

This is a crucial upgrade to preserve life on Earth, you know that, right?

Small but can be a useful feature. But I don't download bigger files on my iPhone. So don't think I will need it.
