Why on earth did they remove it in the first place? Seems so weird and arbitrary.

Maybe some Apple intern was cleaning up code and broke it by mistake?

No, they completely changed how the calculator worked, so probably rewrote a lot of code. Now, you can see not just the current number you’re typing, but the whole operation.

Holding down acts like the AC ("All Clear") button. A simple tap acts like C ("Clear").

A simple tap acts like a backspace button, erasing 1 digit or symbol at a time.

This feature has been available in traditional and Windows calculators for decades.
I can't count the number of basic, practical things that took (or will take) Apple forever to implement. Or re-implement in this case.
