That's fine; it's been that way with iMessage for years and no one really cares.

I'm just happy to have RCS...I text a lot of Android users daily. I checked my WhatsApp, and of my 292 contacts, 5 are using it.
Out of 109 contacts 89 of mine are on WhatsApp 😂😂😂

In Sweden RCS is not yet supported on iPhone. Looks like neither Apple nor operator has any interest in implementing it.

As a happy Tello subscriber I'm glad to see this become available. Hopefully it will work better than some the the above experiences with it.
How's it working out for you (assuming you're on the beta)? Mine has been stuck on the 'waiting for activation' message since installing on Monday evening.

I had the same issue as others here have explained. Group messaging was terrible. a group of 20 people were coming in as single texts. No RCS. I was on an MVNO of ATT. Switched to actual ATT and I haven't had a problem since. At the end of the day " you get what you pay for" with MVNO's and discount services (in my experience)

No idea why this requires an iOS update to enable, but here we are...

I also don't understand why it took so long in general. Google claims to have done everything Apple requires of them as of the release of iOS 18, and in this case I believe them. It was just Apple waiting to implement it, and of course Apple won't comment on that at all.

At least it didn't take five years like it did to get 5G support.

So since that is your experience it is everyone else’s by default?
I was just pointing out that just because most of your contacts use WhatsApp doesn't mean most of everyone's contacts use it. In my experience most people communicate through their phone's default messaging app whether Android or iOS

That’s already been done, and it’s called WhatsApp.

This is why I don’t understand what problem RCS is trying to solve. Cross platform, device and network agnostic messaging is a solved problem. RCS does not add anything to this.

WhatsApp is a too; for Meta and they are not known for not doing sneaky ship with customers. I know it’s now e-2-e…but they’re adding a lot of useless stuff to it lately.

I ment a universal app that does one thing, simply, securely and everywherely. 🤟

it doesn't. it's a carrier definition update.
this will be available for other versions too.
every iOS update includes a set of carrier definition files - one for every device+operator combination.
if an operator completes a certification for a new service with apple (passes all tests and validation) their carrier definition file will be updated to contain the new service. everything is controlled by this, as the core functionality is already in the iOS. this is why for example FaceTime over cellular was not working in some operators' networks, while it was OK in other networks. the same way, RCS is controlled by this mechanism.

the updated carrier definition files can be downloaded from phobos, this is where the phone checks for available updates periodically - and the user is presented with a popup message about new Carrier definition file is available and require confirmation to download and apply those. you can check yours in settings > about > network provider, you may need to tap it a few times so it displays the operator name and a version number next to it.

I use a OnePlus and I turned off RCS ages ago because... Well everybody here has already posted all their problems. I can tell you they're not unique to iOS.
