Apple is expected to release iOS 18.4 to the general public as soon as next week, following more than a month of beta testing.

Generic-iOS-18.4-Feature.jpg

Apple's website says some iOS 18.4 features will be released in "early April," so the update should be out as early as Tuesday, April 1.

Apple this week seeded the iOS 18.4 Release Candidate, which is typically the final beta version, barring the discovery of any major last-minute software bugs. iOS updates are typically released one week after the Release Candidate, and next week will be early April, so that would align with the timeframe that Apple has provided.

There is always a possibility of a Release Candidate 2, however, which could push back the release schedule by up to one more week.

iOS 18.4 is compatible with the iPhone XS series and newer, and it will be available in the Settings app under General → Software Update once it is released.

While the personalized Siri features that were originally expected to launch as part of iOS 18.4 have been delayed, the update still includes a handful of new features. There are a few Apple Intelligence additions, including Priority Notifications, along with an Ambient Music feature in Control Center, new emoji options, support for lossless audio and low-latency audio on AirPods Max with a USB-C port, and more.Other software updates like iPadOS 18.4, macOS 15.4, watchOS 11.4, tvOS 18.4, visionOS 2.4, and more should also be released as soon as next week.

It's a very solid release.

However, I am not able to change the default map app here in the EU. It is only Apple Maps even though I have Google Maps installed.

In other news, Apple has purchased approximately 250 Nvidia GB300 NVL72 racks for one billion dollars with the order split between Dell and Super Micro. No word on delivery details but we could assume that it will be more than a year before any kind of improved Siri will be here.

Early on it was said this release adds RCS support to the remaining TMobile MVNOs but I’m still not seeing it.

This release has been horrible on battery life. That’s about par for the course for Apple.

The new emojis are pointless aren’t they? When you can make infinite ones with genmoji… I’m really confused what Apple is thinking lately

So I take it there are no new Siri releases at all. Not just Siri 2.0 apple intelligence features but absolutely none? Typical. That’s why people are so upset about the promised new AI features, they’re just going to ignore Siri altogether. I wonder if they will even mention the word or just talk over it like they did the words artificial intelligence during the WWDC before last.

A mere month of "beta testing"?

I think we all know it'll end up the usual 6 months post-release until iOS 19, then rinse and repeat.

Apple will probably use those server racks to implement Siri LLM, which they might introduce with this fall's OS updates (iOS 19, etc.), but as you say, fuller implementation isn't supposed to happen until spring 2026. But the current/long-standing problems with Siri that people experience don't involve needing more server processing power, but rather are due to poor implementation of its on-device capabilities. But the latest rumor is that Apple may be planning to hand off some of Siri's tasks that have until now been handled on-device, to this Siri LLM, so it'll be interesting to see how much of that happens.

Where did you read this? I hope it’s true. If they can have their own private compute and claim that it is completely safe, then they ought to go that route for Siri. Yes, on device is great, especially when you don’t have Internet, but private cloud compute may be the answer to really getting Siri going. If you still have the info source, please share.

Hey Apple, I’m using your RC 18.4 on my 16Pro and Apple Watch 10. Is it too much to ask to allow the Apple Watch to accept an incoming call when I’m using my AirPods Pro 2 instead of always saying “Call Failed”. You still have a test team right???
