Although at this point the “real world” *is* the internet. more and more jobs are going remote, tuns of schools and classes are going remote, that’s the “real world” for millions and millions of people, for better or for worse.
All the studies I’ve seen indicate this shift is very much for the worse. Mental health is getting worse, obesity levels are getting worse, online fraud and scams are at all time record high and children are committing suicide due to cyber bullying. Social media is fuelling misogyny and serious violence by children against other children.

Screen Time has got to be the worst, most poorly designed Apple software ever. Besides the fact that it doesn't work.
Just give us proper multiple users on iOS.

On the other hand, because the Internet is remote, people who have never been able to work previously are now getting opportunities they never would have without it.

New technology always has dangers and downsides. This just shows that parenting is not what it should be. Kids must be taught how to use these tools for good, and Screen Time is an essential feature to help them learn responsibility and time management. I wonder how the world will look in a few years with an entire generation of iPad kids grown up. Kind of a scary thought.

Personally I would like to see smartphones and social media treated the same as other harmful products like cigarettes and alcohol with age restrictions on their use.

They need to go back to the previous notifications system for extra time requests too, rather then filling up a messages conversation with screentime requests!

One reason I’d hate that, is Cigarettes and Alcohol have no legitimate healthy use.

Smartphones (i may agree with you on social media) but smartphones are basically computers, and there are many legitimate good things you can do it on it all day.

Reading books, research on the net, etc.

But I was a nerd and read Wikipedia articles all day for fun lol

You’re right. Probably not smartphones but I would restrict their use in schools.

Social media is the real problem here.

Screen time isn't perfect but its one of the most important functions on iPhone. I just wish they took more parental feedback on its failings and responded more quickly to how easy it can be gotten around.

The Anxious Generation by Haidt basically shows enough data to convince me no phone and defineilty no social media before 16 and especially for girls. No phones in schools. And also no laptops from schools. None of it has been a positive for students. Social media is absolutely devastating to the developing female brain (bad for the boys but worse for the girls).

I dont know about misogyny (the book didnt have any reports on that)....but social media is messing with girls brains in a way that is producing rates of mental illness that is just shocking.

Screen Time has been broken for years. Great concept, but shoddy execution and seemingly zero fixes.

With our kids screen time app limit settings reset randomly between 10 seconds and two months of establishing them. It's maddening.
