Additional Notes

To get the beta over-the-air:
  1. Enable Beta Updates (Settings > General > Software Updates > Beta Updates)
  2. Make sure you’re signed into the right Apple Account
  3. Select which beta you’d like to receive (public/developer beta)
  4. Hit "Back" and pull down to refresh
  5. Back up to a computer or to iCloud
  6. Install the beta
If you no longer wish to receive beta updates:
  1. Turn off the Beta Updates (you can also sign out of your Apple Account to reset this setting)
  2. Wait for the next public release or follow the guide below to go back to a release build
Troubleshooting: If the beta doesn’t show up on your phone, try turning on airplane mode, then turning it back off, or restart your device.

How to install using a Mac?
  1. You’ll need the Xcode beta itself or a MobileDevice.pkg somebody extracted from the beta (click with two fingers or control-click), then choose Show Package Contents. Go to Contents/Resources/Packages. - this will work on older Macs that do not support the latest macOS or Xcode betas)
  2. Back up to your Mac or to iCloud in case you need to go back to another version
  3. Hold down Option, then click on ‘Check for Update’/‘Restore iPhone...’ and select the IPSW file you downloaded from the Apple Developer site. Note: You must be connected to the internet to complete the restore.
  4. Enter your iPhone passcode if you’re prompted to do so.
Notes/Tips:
  • Always keep a backup in case you need to restore your phone
  • Restoring wipes your settings and all data on your iPhone
  • You only need to reinstall MobileDevice.pkg if your Mac stops recognizing your iPhone
  • There is no MobileDevice.pkg equivalent to iTunes for PC which would require a new iTunes to support new/beta iOS
  • Upgrading to a newer iPhone? You can update using your Mac before setting up the phone

It’s a joke even 11Pro is out of this scope when almost for sure iOS 26 will be his last.

But Apple is Apple - we care about security but only if you follow what we want. Otherwise get stuck on 18.7.2

All phones that can be updates to iOS 26 is "out of scope", it's been like this since quite a few versions back.
Just update to iOS 26 and enjoy an updated phone. Sure, the new GUI looks different but you can turn some of them off and it isn't that different. Performance and bugs has been mostly ironed out too so i'd say its a nobrainer to update if you don't have apps or HW that isn't compatible with iOS 26.

UI is not designed for dark mode, people who want no distractions, but we got a lot of bugs and performance issues on old devices - nope.
Yet you are right, that’s only way as I said before - agree with Apple or be left behind software lock.

Well, this gives - at least for me - the long update support merchandising promise a little different taste. They promise ~7 years of updates, but only if you are ready to completely submit to their policy of practically ruining the experience on older devices just for the sake of it. 🤔

Just my 0,02€

You are even very lucky, you got the 18.7.3, using the beta loophole, Apple forgot for a few days...
I have, too. Yet I'm not so sure about being lucky with it. While 18.7.2 was officially the final verson for 16e, the 18.7.3 being a beta (even with the same build number as a release) has been limited with certificates for iMessage, FaceTime and other Apple services until January 2027 or so.

Sorry for the cumbersome explanation, this is what I've read somewhere on this forum. So now I'm actually afraid that the phone would stop working with mentioned services in 2027.

I wish I could have been proven wrong.

ps. I believe it is obvious that iOS 26 is not even taken into the view. To me it's not an option. I'm not updating to it. I'd rather have a half-working phone rather than go to 26.

I think 18.7.3 is an RC so it shouldn't have these limitations. I could be wrong.

Surely there willl be showstopper security bugs before then that'll want you to upgrade though. Feels like those drop every few months.
