iOS 18 CarPlay unable to pair with new car

I’m finding that pairing with Apple CarPlay in a new car (with BMW iDrive 8.5) is unable to pair, it just fails to connect. It seems that the phone does not get to the step where a code is displayed that you confirm matches the car. The same process works fine on a iOS 17.x deveice.

Anybody else experienced initial CarPlay paring issues?
