I know… I’m just an Apple basher but iOS 18, specifically the Photos app, is why I will go back to Android, after 10 years.

And, for the record, Apple has been selling less iPhones for the past 3 years but… selling plenty to keep making horrible decisions.

Being skeptical at first... after playing around with the Photos app, I'm really liking the options available.

Having thousands of photos in the app. I especially like having a large grid of photos that I can quickly/fluidly zoom in and out, while scrolling up and down, and being able to quickly find a past photo of interest.

I don’t like it either guys, but I’m sure that at the end we’ll all get used to it. Just still find a bit weird that macOS and iPadOS app has still sidebar though.
I’ve been using it for 4 weeks, this ain’t getting better. I’m using it less and less.

I’ve been with Apple since the beginning and, as much as we hate certain changes, we do get used to them… this ain’t that.

It’s almost as if they asked AI to design their Photos app because a normal human didn’t do this.

I hid everything besides Albums. Now I can live with it again.

What would actually have been useful is to show me which photos in my endless feed have yet to be sorted into Albums or tell me what Album photo X is part of. On my Samsung device I can tell by a little indicator on the thumbnail.

It is so hard to sort photos into albums on iOS unless you do it right away because I am always like "hmmmm did I already sort those photos into Albums? hmmm where did I leave off last time".

I also don't understand the "on this day" memories push notifications like Id expect it to be from actually last year at this time? instead its just a random collection of some time in September of last year. That ain't "on this day"

THIS is my biggest, MAJOR gripe about Apple. To me, a photographer having used Windows since...long....Photos is just a pile-o-photos. I've had ipads for 10+ years and I get around well enough. But photos, I pull my hair out.

(I religiously sort my photos into a folder structure chronologically sorted by dates, I tag almost all my photos...WHICH I might ad doesn't work in Photos...now I just dump my photos onto my computer, sort and tag...and leave the pile as is on my phone.)

The "did I put that into a album or not. Also where did I save from what app.

It's just unelegant. More so now with more photos than before.

Really dislike how they switched the order of photos within albums. I want new photos at the bottom and older ones above. It's really fast to jump to the top of the list by touching above it. Now it involves scrolling forever. If they had just included an option to change the order of sorting it would have solved this.

The new app on iPhone is really strange. While the mac version has a map section in the photos category, there is just is the photos on iPhone. The map can be found in albums there.
Isn't a map just one way to view photos?

There was a post in the forums with a poll, and surprisingly, about ½ the folks voted that they hate it. Very polarizing opinions, just like when Apple moved Safari's Address Bar to the bottom and then Apple allowed both options. I don't see a way to offer "both options" (old style and new) at this point...
There’s always a way to make ANY software better. Easiest way IMO, would be for photos to add back Recents/Roll as one of the collections, and let me pick any collection to replace the Librart grid view at the top. Oh, and let me change to reverse sort order for bonus points.

I actually like it better than what we had before. You get a little more room when scrolling because you don’t have the bottom bar and I’m able to get to everything I wanna get to quicker.

But going back a long ways and they never fixed this: the main photo grid is just an endless sea of photos. What happened to that smart organization stuff they touted years ago that would put your photos under headings by day and location? That was super helpful! The endless grid is annoying.

Edit: oh crap the header doesn’t even say where the photos on your screen are from anymore, just the date! Dang Apple. Come on!

Don’t be weak. If it sucks, it’s sucks. It ok to have a contrarian opinion against Apple and like something different.

Times in history where your type of thinking hasn’t worked out:

- Dinosaurs, right as meteors hit to wipe them out
- When the Federal Reserve made owning gold illegal
- And a couple other events which I’m sure I’m not allowed to mention

I spend enough time at the Apple technical school every September. Apple was made great by no need for a manual to get all but the advanced options to work. Today, the learning curve just to see a photo ridiculous. Advice to Apple KISS.

Customization can be great. But completely ruining the Photos app and then letting everyone “make it their own” means that after a few short months, no one will have the same look or set of collections. Everyone’s will be different.
Is that bad though? I'll take what works for me over consistency with others any day.

And yet they still don’t allow you to only keep the final version of an edited photo.

Photo app is a train wreck. I have imported photos from when I used a digital camera (like pre 2011). Those have often bogus dates like future dates. In the implementation of “Recent” with iOS 18 those are now at the bottom of the screen, i.e. I have about 2,000 to scroll to get to truly recent photos. In iOS 17 Recent/Camera Roll that was not the case. Truly ruined the experience for me.

I have now been trying to customise the Photos App in a way that works with my work flow, in particular Lightroom for mobile, I have used for over 10 years. But nothing works.

Questions:
1. How can I set up sth like a recent Camera Roll album. Recent saves does not work, the day view does not really work
2. within the albums is there no way to sort by latest addition? when I edit a picture in Lightroom and export back to my phone it will mix all pictures ab. it is a nightmare: I no longer know which ones to keep and which ones to delete

Can't believe I now spent over 1 week to come up with a layout that works with my photography work flow. Any help appreciated

But breaking it all into whatever it is now isn't good for all. "If it ain't broke, don't fix it"

Things i quite enjoy about the new photos app: ability to turn off screenshots in the main library so it's just photos.. (kind of long overdue)
Things that confuse me: literally the rest of the app. Mostly just don't use it unless i have to look something up

I completely disagree. I love that they got rid of the mostly redundant camera roll. Initially I expected to hate it, but having spent a few weeks using it I became quite fond of it. Maybe you just need to give it a chance?
