All four iPhone 15 models feature a setting that prevents the devices from charging beyond 80% while toggled on, which can potentially improve an iPhone battery's lifespan by reducing the time that the battery is fully charged. And with iOS 18, Apple has taken this feature a step further by adding new 85%, 90%, and 95% charging limit options.

The feature can be found in the Settings app under Battery → Charging.

The charging limit feature remains exclusive to the iPhone 15 lineup on the first iOS 18 beta, with the option not found on the iPhone 14 Pro or older.

The first iOS 18 beta is now available for Apple Developer Program members, and a public beta will follow in July. Following beta testing, the update should be widely released to all users with an iPhone XS or newer in September.

I know some people will think “whats the point“ but I really like Apple’s push to introduce limited charging options. I charge my 15 Pro Max to 80% every night as I don’t need the full capacity, and after 9 months my battery health is going strong at 98%. Hopefully this comes to the watch very soon

there is no hardware reason this cant be added to *any* iphone supporting this OS. programming the charge controller has been around forever. this is simply locked out for older models for marketing. please don't restrict this to only 15+. I hate having to keep killing my battery when it is docked for GPS functionality or even just watching a movie or something when power is available.

Yep, jailbreak confirms the feature is hidden behind a simple toggle. Some people have enabled it on iPhone 11.

It's always nice to see more options that shouldn't have any negative effects and can be ignored for those who don't need it while covering the ones who do.

The 80% charging is amazing. I have been using it on my iPhone 15 Pro Max and even after eight months, it still has a maximum capacity of 100%. I'm glued to my phone, so it definitely gets lots of use. I switch it to optimized whenever I travel.

Algorithmic charging requires some intelligence to run efficiently and reliably. This tech is built into the latest and greatest iPhones.

Part of me thinks I could set mine to 90% since I rarely need the full battery in a day, but the other part of me replaces my phone about every year and wonders why I would not want 100% of my battery when I get it off the charger. I guess I have a decision to make. Who knows if this year will be a replacement year, I have skipped in the past. Ha.

This isn't an algorithm. Optimized Battery Charging "intelligently" delayed charging past 80%, is available even on iPhone 6S. This latest Charging Limit feature is about as basic as it gets.

It's more complicated than you think. It doesn't just charge to 80% and stop, it slow charges as well based on algorithms of your previous use patterns. Slow charging is another battery-extending safety measure.

I like this feature and use charging to 80% on my iPad. But I wish there was an option to charge to 100% only once. When I want a fully charged battery now I have to deactivate the feature and activate it again after charging.

Heck yeah, thanks Apple! I put in a feature request for this specifically, you’re welcome everyone =p

80% isn’t quite enough to keep me from going into dangerously low territory at the end of the day, 85 or 90% is going to be perfect. Can’t wait!

Are we just making up stuff now? Somehow, Optimized Battery Charging doesn't "slow charge" when the device hits 80%?

Anyway, the jailbreak already proves Charging Limit to be purely feature rationing by Apple. When toggled on, it works completely fine on iPhone 11 through 14.

It slow charges to 80% and then drips charge until you remove it from charger. The X% to 80% is slow charged until near the time it thinks you'll be ready to remove it and use it (based on your previous behavior).

Okay, more options are good, but what I really want here is a "charge to 100% tonight" button for the few times I need it (mostly when traveling). Or a shortcut action. Or a Control Center switch.

Navigating Settings to turn this off and on again is kinda clunky.

But I want 87%. :(

Hopefully iPhone 16 can unlock extended charging profiles.

Yes that would be very useful.

I’ve been using a Shortcut to notify me when my battery has been charged to 90% then I unplug it. I really wish they could just toggle this option on for older models so that I don’t have to monitor it and just leave it plugged in until I need to walk away from the charging cable.

Doing this seems to have prolonged my battery life as i’m at 94% still on a launch day ordered 13 Pro.
